Farming and agriculture: Garden Plot setup, watering, and crop types

Farming is worth the setup time once you understand watering schedules and seed sources. Build Round Plots for efficiency and harvest only when needed.

The Problem

“My crops keep dying. I planted seeds and watered them once but everything wilted. Is farming even worth the effort?”

⚡ Before You Start

Find a Hose to unlock the Garden Plot recipe
Locate Bio Lab D for farming materials
Secure a reliable water source near your planned farm

🎒 What to Bring

■Garden Plot (Round preferred for water efficiency)
■Water container for manual watering
■Tomato Seeds or Anteverse Wheat to start

Prerequisites

  • Find a Hose to unlock the Garden Plot recipe
  • Locate Bio Lab D for farming materials
  • Secure a reliable water source near your planned farm

Recommended Loadout

  • Garden Plot (Round preferred for water efficiency)
  • Water container for manual watering
  • Tomato Seeds or Anteverse Wheat to start

Common Mistakes

  • 1.Watering once and leaving — seeds die after 5-6 minutes without water
  • 2.Planting without a nearby water source, making watering runs tedious
  • 3.Harvesting prematurely and wasting water on crops you cannot store yet

The Problem

My crops keep dying. I planted seeds and watered them once but everything wilted. Is farming even worth the effort?

The Solution

Farming produces a renewable food supply that makes hunting and scavenging optional. But plants are needy — they demand constant water, protected space, and patience. Here is how to set up a farm that does not wilt while you are out exploring.

The Growth Cycle (Verified) Crops take 5 in-game days from planting to maturity. This is not real-time minutes — it is full day/night cycles. Do not stand there watching the plant; go run expeditions and check back after several sleep (see sleep and fatigue guide)s. Once mature, certain crops can be harvested once per in-game day without replanting — they regrow from the same plot. Harvest only when you actually need the produce: crops sitting on a mature plant do not spoil. The moment you pick them, the spoilage timer starts.

Watering Mechanics Garden Plots display a blue water bar. When it empties, the plant begins dying. Seeds have a brief dehydrat (see water management guide)ion grace period — roughly 5 to 6 minutes — before they wither permanently. You cannot water once and leave for a full expedition; you need either a nearby water source for quick refills, or automated plumbing. Watering works by holding any water container and interacting with the plot's frame (not the soil itself). Round Plots are more water-efficient than Square Plots — use ~24 mL per watering cycle versus higher consumption on square variants.

Unlocking the Recipe The Garden Plot recipe unlocks when you pick up a Hose — search maintenance closets and utility rooms in the Office Sector. Without a Hose in your inventory, the recipe stays hidden. This is the most common reason new players think farming is not in the game yet.

Seed Sources

  • Tomato Seeds: Kitchen Area, Office Sector Level 2. Your first and most reliable seed.
  • Anteverse Wheat: Far Garden portal world (see Portal Worlds overview). Unlocks early and is worth rushing — Wheat is used in Healing Syringes.
  • Super Tomato Seeds: Crafted at a Chemistry Bench from Tomato Seeds + Anteverse Wheat + Enethiol. Higher yield per harvest.

Water Source Proximity Build your farm within walking distance of a Water Cooler (4,500 mL capacity). Running across the facility to refill a Water Bottle between watering cycles is how farms die. The Water Barrel (10,000 mL) is the upgrade path — unlocked after Manufacturing West exploration — and can gravity-feed multiple plots if positioned above them.

Agriculture Skill Leveling the Agriculture skill unlocks three benefits: fertilizer crafting (boosts growth speed), extra harvest yield per plant, and a passive growth rate bonus. Every harvest grants XP. Plant more plots than you think you need — the XP from bulk harvesting levels the skill faster.

Cooking Synergy Farm produce feeds into cooking recipes that provide buffs (stamina, XP boost, radiation resistance). A mature farm plus a powered stove plus stored water means infinite buff food. Soup recipes specifically require a Cooking Pot filled with 1,000 mL of clean water — another reason to keep clean water production near your farm.

Step-by-Step

  1. Find a Hose in Office Sector maintenance closets — this unlocks the Garden Plot recipe.
  2. Craft Round Garden Plots (more water-efficient than Square). Place them in a lit, powered room near a Water Cooler.
  3. Fill a Water Bottle or Cooking Pot (1,000 mL capacity) from the Cooler. Interact with the plot frame — not the soil — to water.
  4. Plant Tomato Seeds from the Kitchen Area on Office Level 2 as your starter crop.
  5. Rush the Far Garden portal to secure Anteverse Wheat — it is required for Healing Syringes and Super Tomato Seeds.
  6. Expect 5 in-game days to maturity. Run expeditions during growth; checking back every few seconds does nothing.
  7. Harvest only when you need produce. Crops stay fresh on an unharvested plant indefinitely.
  8. Once the Water Barrel is unlocked (Manufacturing West), position it above your plots for gravity-fed watering.
  9. Plant more plots than you need for faster Agriculture XP — bulk harvests level the skill quickly.

Common Mistakes

  • Watering once and leaving for a full expedition — seeds die within minutes of the water bar emptying.
  • Not picking up a Hose first, so the Garden Plot recipe never appears in the crafting menu.
  • Building the farm far from a Water Cooler, turning every watering into a 5-minute round trip.
  • Harvesting everything the moment it matures, then having produce rot in storage because you were not ready to cook it.
  • Using Square Plots instead of Round — same function, worse water efficiency.
