How radiation works
Contaminated zones apply a base radiation rate measured in rads per second. Your gear reduces that rate by a percentage — the total resistance from all equipped pieces stacks additively. At 100% resistance you take zero rads; at 0% you take the full zone rate.
The danger threshold is 100 rads. Below 50 rads you get no debuffs. Between 50 and 100 you accumulate nausea and movement penalties. Above 100 rads you take direct health damage that accelerates fast.
Worked examples
Lab Sector with basic hazmat
The Lab Sector runs at roughly 2 rads/s. A basic Hazmat Suit gives 50% resistance, dropping intake to 1 rad/s. You have 100 seconds before hitting the danger threshold — enough for a quick loot run but not a full exploration pass.
Reactor zone with full protection
Reactor areas hit 5 rads/s. Full lead-lined armor plus Pentetic Acid pre-dose gets you to roughly 85% resistance, taking 0.75 rads/s. That gives about 133 seconds of safe time. Always bring a Pentetic Acid Syringe as backup to reset your rad counter mid-run.
Gear radiation resistance values
These values are sourced from the community wiki and in-game item tooltips. Resistance stacks additively across all equipped slots. The calculator uses these exact values.
Abiotic Factor is updated regularly. If a patch changes radiation mechanics or armor stats, treat calculator results as estimates until the data is rechecked.
Survival tips for high-rad zones
Always carry at least two Pentetic Acid Syringes when entering reactor-level zones. One to use at 50 rads as a preventive measure, one as emergency backup. The syringe instantly removes 50 rads and costs one Hydrochloric Acid, one Enethiol, one Salt, and one Metal Scrap to craft.
Plan your route before entering. Know where the loot is, grab it, and get out. Standing still to read item descriptions in a 5 rad/s zone costs you 25 rads in five seconds. Pre-mark containers you want to hit and beeline for them.
Radiation Broth (+25% rad resistance for 180s) stacks with your gear resistance. If your armor gives 60% and the broth adds 25%, you are at 85% total. That difference matters in the highest zones.
