How to Get the Optic Lens
The Optic Lens cannot be found in containers or crafted directly at a workbench. It is obtained only through a trade with the Blacksmith NPC in the Manufacturing West region.
The Blacksmith Trade
| NPC | Location | Item to Trade | Item Received |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Blacksmith | The Forge, Manufacturing West | 1x Reinforced Hose | 1x Optic Lens |
The trade is a 1:1 exchange and can be repeated as many times as the player has Reinforced Hoses available. To initiate the trade, approach the wooden trading box in front of the Blacksmith and drop the Reinforced Hose into it.
Blacksmith Location Details
The Blacksmith operates from The Forge, a large warehouse structure in Manufacturing West. Key identifying features include:
- A large banner with the text "F.O.R.G.E" displayed on top of the building
- A fuming Cooking Pot visible on the left side of the shop window
- The Blacksmith NPC standing inside the shop area
- A wooden trading box placed in front of the shop window
The fastest route to reach The Forge is to take the Tram to the Manufacturing West stop, exit the tram, and follow the main corridor east. The Forge will be on the right side, identifiable by the glow from the solder pot.
Crafting the Reinforced Hose
The Reinforced Hose recipe becomes available when the player picks up a Steel Cable for the first time. The item can be crafted at any Crafting Bench.
| Ingredient | Quantity | How to Obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Hose | 1 | Smash wooden crates in Manufacturing West and Mine Crates |
| Steel Cable | 1 | Found in Manufacturing West mines, The Train portal world, or traded from the Blacksmith for Military Electronics |
| Box of Screws | 1 | Crafted from 2x Metal Scrap at a Crafting Bench; also looted from Manufacturing crates |
Farming Route for Reinforced Hoses
Bring a hammer or other melee tool for crate smashing, and treat each run as a Reinforced Hose run rather than a general loot sweep. The limiting piece is usually the ingredient you forgot to target, not the Blacksmith trade itself. Once a Steel Cable, Hose, and Box of Screws are available, the Optic Lens trade is straightforward.
Trade route checklist
Use this checklist before walking to the Blacksmith:
- Pick up a Steel Cable at least once so the Reinforced Hose recipe is known.
- Confirm you have the Hose, Steel Cable, and Box of Screws for each trade.
- Craft the Reinforced Hoses at a safe Crafting Bench before traveling.
- Empty enough inventory space to pick up every Optic Lens.
- Trade only the number of hoses needed for the current craft plus a small reserve.
This avoids the most common time waste: reaching The Forge with two of the three ingredients and needing to backtrack.
Items That Require Optic Lens
Story Progression (Mandatory)
| Item | Optic Lenses Needed | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Synchrotron Pump Repair | 1 | Required to unlock Cascade Laboratories |
Weapons
| Item | Optic Lenses Needed |
|---|---|
| Magbow | 2 |
Laser Power System
| Item | Optic Lenses Needed |
|---|---|
| Photon Receptor | 1 |
| Laser Power Converter | 1 |
| Laser Reflector | 1 |
Tools and Utility Items
| Item | Optic Lenses Needed |
|---|---|
| Makeshift Binoculars | 1 |
| Makeshift Headlamp | 1 |
| Projection Matrix | 1 (plus 1 Anteverse Gem and 4 Staplers) |
Priority Planning for Optic Lens Usage
The following decision table helps determine which items to craft first based on current progression needs.
| Priority Level | Items to Craft | Lenses Required | When to Craft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mandatory | Synchrotron repair | 1 | Immediately upon obtaining first lens |
| High | Laser Power Converter, Laser Reflector | 2 | After Synchrotron repair, before exploring Cascade Laboratories |
| Medium | Magbow | 2 | When needing ranged combat options |
| Optional | Binoculars, Headlamp, Projection Matrix, Photon Receptor | 4 | When surplus lenses are available |
Spend lenses by route impact
Optic Lenses appear in both progression and convenience items. That makes them a classic "looks optional until it blocks you" material.
| Current goal | Lens decision | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fixing Synchrotron progression | Spend the first lens here | Story access beats optional gear |
| Preparing laser systems | Reserve lenses before crafting comfort items | Laser tools can unlock or simplify later routes |
| Building a ranged weapon | Craft only when combat is the blocker | A weapon lens competes with utility |
| Making binoculars or headlamp | Wait for surplus | Useful, but not the first progression gate |
| Projection Matrix route | Check Staplers and Anteverse Gem first | Lens is only one bottleneck in the recipe |
If a craft does not unlock a route, solve a current fight, or remove a repeated travel problem, wait. The Blacksmith trade is repeatable, but the ingredients still cost route time.
Total Optic Lenses Needed in One Playthrough
| Category | Items | Lenses |
|---|---|---|
| Mandatory | Synchrotron repair | 1 |
| High priority | Laser Power Converter + Laser Reflector | 2 |
| Medium priority | Magbow | 2 |
| Optional | Binoculars, Headlamp, Projection Matrix, Photon Receptor | 4 |
| Total | 9 |
Common mistakes and recovery
| Mistake | How to Avoid or Recover |
|---|---|
| Searching crates for Optic Lens | The item only comes from the Blacksmith trade. Do not waste time looting for it. |
| Making only one trade | A full playthrough requires up to 9 lenses. Stock up while still in Manufacturing West. |
| Not unlocking the Reinforced Hose recipe | Pick up a Steel Cable first. Found in Manufacturing West mines and The Train portal world. |
| Recycling Staplers | Staplers are needed for the Projection Matrix. Keep all Staplers found during exploration. |
Workflow: How to Secure Multiple Optic Lenses Efficiently
- Unlock the Reinforced Hose recipe by picking up a Steel Cable from Manufacturing West mines or The Train portal world.
- Farm materials by running a loop through Manufacturing West mines. Collect Steel Cables, Metal Scrap, and Hoses from crates. Craft Boxes of Screws from Metal Scrap at a Crafting Bench.
- Craft multiple Reinforced Hoses at a Crafting Bench before leaving the area. Aim for at least 5-6 hoses to cover mandatory and high-priority lens needs.
- Travel to The Forge in Manufacturing West. Locate the building with the "F.O.R.G.E" banner and the fuming Cooking Pot outside.
- Trade each Reinforced Hose by dropping it into the wooden trading box in front of the Blacksmith. Collect one Optic Lens per hose.
Synchrotron Repair Context
The Synchrotron repair requires three items: the Optic Lens, a Diode, and a Fiber Optic Cable. Unlike the Optic Lens, the Diode and Fiber Optic Cable have very few secondary uses. The Fiber Optic Cable is also obtained through the Blacksmith trade and is one of the three items needed to fix the broken Synchrotron in Manufacturing West. Prioritize the Optic Lens for stockpiling since it appears in more recipes than the other Synchrotron parts.
Storage rule after trading
Create a small "lens reserve" crate near the Crafting Bench. Put Optic Lenses, Fiber Optic Cable, Diodes, and Projection Matrix ingredients there until the next craft is chosen. Do not store them in a generic electronics crate if multiple players use the base.
| Storage mistake | Result | Safer setup |
|---|---|---|
| Lenses mixed with common electronics | They get spent casually | Keep a progression-material crate |
| Hoses traded one at a time | Extra walking to The Forge | Craft and trade in a planned batch |
| Optional tools crafted first | Synchrotron or laser setup waits | Reserve progression lenses first |
| No note for lens count | Co-op players duplicate or overspend | Track target crafts beside the crate |
The goal is not to hoard every lens forever. The goal is to make each lens spend visible before it happens.
