What this reference solves
Every Abiotic Factor skill uses the same cumulative XP requirements, but a cumulative table is easy to misread. The value beside a level is the total XP needed to reach that level, not the extra XP needed after the previous level. This page keeps the complete threshold table in one place and shows how to turn it into an answer for a real planning question: how much progress remains between the character's current position and a useful perk checkpoint?
This is a reference page, not a ranking of skills. It does not tell every character to chase the same level. A solo scientist who repeatedly runs out of carry capacity, a ranged specialist waiting for a weapon-handling perk, and a base builder working toward bench upgrades have different reasons to use the same table. Start with the blocked task, identify the relevant skill and perk, then calculate the gap. The Skill Perk Planner performs that subtraction and lists the milestones crossed along the way.
Complete cumulative XP table
The difference column is the XP added between the previous threshold and the listed level. It is included so you can check a calculation without treating a cumulative total as a single-level cost.

The increasing differences explain why a level number alone is a poor estimate of remaining work. Moving from level 4 to level 5 adds 892 XP, while moving from level 19 to level 20 adds 10,900 XP. A plan that says only "reach level 20" hides most of the decision. A better plan names the next perk that changes the current problem and recalculates after reaching it.
Calculate a level gap correctly
Use cumulative totals for both ends of the subtraction. If the exact current XP is visible in the skill screen, use it. If it is not available, using the threshold for the current completed level gives a conservative result because it assumes no progress inside that level.
- Open the skill screen and record the skill name and completed level.
- Record the current total XP if the interface shows it clearly.
- Choose a target tied to a confirmed perk, not an arbitrary round number.
- Find the target's cumulative XP in the table.
- Subtract the current total. If only the level is known, subtract the current level's threshold instead.
- List every perk above the current level and at or below the target.
- Stop and review the plan when the first useful milestone is reached.
For example, level 5 begins at 2,464 cumulative XP and level 10 requires 13,950. The conservative gap is 11,486 XP. If the character already has 4,000 total XP, the gap is 9,950 instead. Do not add the difference column from level 1 each time or subtract 2,464 from every individual row. Both mistakes count some XP twice.
Choose the target from a task
A threshold becomes useful only after it is attached to a player outcome. Use this worksheet to keep the number connected to the save rather than turning it into an open-ended grind.

The checkpoint should remain close enough to change a current decision. If the only selected target is level 20, write down the earlier perks crossed and review at each one. A new perk can remove the original blocker, make another skill more urgent, or change which equipment is worth carrying.
Account for jobs, traits, and XP effects
Jobs and traits can affect a character's starting position or XP behavior. They do not create a second threshold table. This distinction matters when two players compare progress. One may start closer to a perk or receive an XP modifier, yet both still reach level 10 at the same cumulative requirement. Food and other effects can also change gains from eligible actions.
Do not convert a remaining-XP total into a completion time unless the specific action, modifier, and stopping conditions are known. Different skills award XP through different behavior. Some training equipment applies a Lactic Acid status after its allowed use, and the Skills source notes that further XP from that equipment pauses until the status is removed. The table remains correct, but a simple "XP per minute" estimate would not describe the whole session.
For co-op planning, record each player's job, relevant traits, current total, and next team responsibility. That prevents one player's starting advantage from being mistaken for a different game rule. It also exposes gaps when every player pursues the same attractive perk while no one develops the skill needed for food, construction, or equipment upkeep.
When the numbers look wrong
- The result is much larger than expected. Confirm that both numbers are cumulative totals. Do not compare a cumulative target with a per-level difference.
- The target is below the current level. The milestone is already passed. Select the next relevant perk or treat the current task as solved.
- The activity no longer grants visible progress. Check whether the action actually belongs to the selected skill and whether a temporary training limit or status has paused that method.
- The character gains levels but the route still fails. Recheck the original blocker. Inventory layout, protection, food, repairs, or weapon choice may be the real constraint.
- A patch changes a perk. Pause the plan, verify the live skill screen and current Skills article, then update the target rather than preserving an old recommendation.
Recovery means returning to a verifiable checkpoint. Record the current total, choose the next confirmed perk, and attach it to one useful expedition or base job. If that activity finishes before the perk is reached, keep the useful output and choose another legitimate task. Do not manufacture busywork merely to make the number move.
Recheck after an update
This table was checked for game version 1.4. The Skills article documents that the maximum level changed during early access, so major updates deserve a fresh check. Open the current Skills source, compare levels 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 with this table, then check the exact perk that motivates the plan. Those five checkpoints catch a changed table quickly without asking a player to audit every row before a short session.
