Four devices, four different jobs

These defenses should not be treated as interchangeable turrets.

The choice starts with the threat. Use an X-Ray Tower for Leyak pressure. Use a Laser Tripmine when a single high-damage trigger is acceptable. Consider a Chopinator for a narrow physical approach where players can avoid its reach. Treat the Tesla Coil as a hazardous perimeter device because its attack is indiscriminate.

Calling the Tesla Coil a "Tesla Tower" or describing the Laser Tripmine as a harmless alarm changes how a player prepares for it. The correct names and trigger consequences are part of the safety plan.

Pick the defense by traffic pattern

Before placing any powered defense, watch how players actually move through the base. Most bad layouts fail because the device is strong against enemies but also sits inside the normal player route.

If the safe route and the trap route are the same route, the layout is not ready yet. Move the device or change the base traffic first.

Placement constraints before damage

Chopinator: control the approach

The Chopinator requires power and damages anything that enters blade reach, including players. Put it where the enemy approach is predictable and where a player does not need to brush past it during normal crafting, storage, or escape.

A corner can be useful only if it does not also become the player's blind corner. Preserve a separate movement lane. If the device loses power, the physical route should still let the player retreat without becoming trapped between the defense and the attacker.

Tesla Coil: define an exclusion zone

The Tesla Coil launches a long-range electric attack and can target player characters. Its range is an advantage only when the base layout keeps normal player movement out of the threatened area.

Do not place it beside the mission exit, a shared crafting aisle, or the place where players return under pressure. A perimeter position with a clear avoidance route is easier to operate. In co-op, every player needs to know the exclusion zone before the coil is powered.

Laser Tripmine: plan for the explosion

The Laser Tripmine deals 600 explosive damage when triggered. It is not merely a beam that reports movement. Place it only where the explosive event is acceptable and where an accidental player crossing has been considered.

Because the trigger itself is the event, do not rely on it as the sole repeatable layer for a long assault. Use it at a selected threshold and keep a second response available after it fires.

X-Ray Tower: reserve it for Leyak

The X-Ray Tower detects and exposes a nearby Leyak, even through a wall. That makes it a specialized containment tool. It should protect the area where players need Leyak warning or suppression, not occupy a general defense slot under the assumption that it replaces an anti-enemy turret.

Its through-wall behavior allows placement on the safe side of a barrier, but the protected work area still needs power continuity and an escape route.

Build a layered response, not a device pile

A layered plan separates detection, damage, and recovery:

  1. Identify the threat. Leyak requires the X-Ray response; ordinary attackers require a different layer.
  2. Choose one controlled threshold. A doorway, corridor, or perimeter edge is easier to understand than devices scattered through the workshop.
  3. Protect the player route. Keep storage, crafting, and the main exit outside indiscriminate attack zones.
  4. Provide backup power for critical powered devices. Count each device downstream of the selected battery.
  5. Leave a manual fallback. The player must be able to retreat or fight if a trap fires, loses power, or targets the wrong thing.

The useful combination is not "place every defense close together." It is "assign each defense one job and ensure their danger zones do not overlap the base's essential movement path."

Power planning for defenses

Powered defenses participate in the same downstream-device battery calculation as other powered objects. A battery loses one charge every five seconds per downstream device. Adding a Chopinator and Tesla Coil to a branch increases its device count by two.

For a 270-second target, each downstream device needs 54 charge. A Carbon Battery at 350 charge can support six devices for about 291.7 seconds under the single-battery model. Review the full calculation in the battery runtime guide.

This ordering is editorial. Change it when the current threat changes, but avoid connecting more devices to a battery without recalculating the runtime.

Do not repair a failed defense plan by adding another hazardous device to the same doorway. First restore a safe player route, then restore the specialized protection, and only then add damage. A base defense is successful when it reduces risk without turning routine movement into another threat.

Write these rules with signs or consistent base layout. Verbal callouts help during a session, but the physical base should still be understandable when someone joins later.
