Base defense comparison: traps, turrets, and safe placement

A source-linked comparison of five Abiotic Factor defenses, including documented damage, power requirements, friendly-fire behavior, and placement tradeoffs.

Assault Events and hostile patrols can threaten a base, but each defense has a different trigger and friendly-fire profile. Some require electrical power, Laser Turrets require a laser input, and the Laser Tripmine is consumed when it detonates.

This page compares five common choices. It does not claim that one ranking fits every enemy, base layout, or difficulty setting.

Defense comparison at a glance

Defense structure comparison showing damage, triggers, and friendly fire riskDamage values are individual listed attacks, not damage per second. Laser Turrets use a laser input; Disc Turret projectiles can harm players.StructureDamageTypeTriggerFriendly FirePowerTesla Coil100ElectricityAuto-aim (proximity)YES — zaps playersRequiredChopinator30Sharp/FanAlways on (melee range)YES — shreds anyone closeRequiredLaser Tripmine600ExplosiveLaser beam brokenKeep lane clearCheck in gameLaser Turret30 per attackLaserAuto-aim (range)No (Wiki guide)Laser inputDisc Turret15SharpAuto-aim (range)YES - path / ricochetRequiredX-Ray TowerSpecialX-Ray FieldAutomatic against LeyakNot documentedRequiredAttack damage is not DPS. Keep player paths outside dangerous firing lanes.

Values follow the linked Chopinator, Tesla Coil, Laser Tripmine, Laser Turret and Disc Turret item references. The Wiki progression guide describes Laser Turrets as having no friendly fire. That does not apply to Disc Turrets: their item page explicitly warns about players and structures in the projectile path, including ricochets. The X-Ray Tower is a separate Leyak response, not an ordinary damage comparison. The Wiki base-defense table lists the X-Ray Tower as requiring power. Neither that table nor the linked item descriptions establish player damage from an X-Ray Tower or the full blast behavior of a Laser Tripmine. Treat those as placement checks, not confirmed safe or unsafe values.

Use-case comparison

DefenseDocumented valueUse-case tradeoff
Tesla Coil100 Electricity damage per attackStrong front-arc coverage, but it targets players too
Laser Tripmine600 Explosive damage on detonationHigh single-use damage at a controlled crossing point
Laser Turret30 Laser damage per attackLong-range automatic fire that requires laser power
Chopinator30 Sharp/Fan damage per contactControls a doorway but creates a dangerous moving blade near player paths
X-Ray TowerX-Ray Field effectSpecialized Leyak control rather than general physical damage
Disc Turret15 Sharp damage per discReusable ranged coverage, but moving targets and ricochets complicate placement

Placement strategy

Example defense placement separating an approach lane from player pathsNot to scale. A planning example separates the crafting and storage area from Tesla Coil arcs and Chopinator contact zones; verify the actual firing lanes before using it.OUTER PERIMETER (kill zone)SAFE ZONECrafting / StorageTTCCLEnemyapproachT = Tesla CoilC = ChopinatorL = Laser Turret

Placement checks:

  1. Tesla Coils go on the outer perimeter facing enemy approach paths
  2. Chopinators guard doorways and chokepoints where you won't walk
  3. Laser Turrets need an unobstructed laser-power connection and a clear firing lane
  4. Keep a clear corridor from your spawn/bed to your crafting area
  5. Never place Tesla Coils next to your workbench or bed

Detailed stats per defense

Tesla Coil

StatValue
Damage100 per hit
Damage typeElectricity
TargetingAuto-aim, proximity trigger
RangeFront-facing 180-degree attack arc
Friendly fireYes, it targets players and other entities indiscriminately
PowerRequired (battery or socket)
Best useA controlled approach where players can remain behind the coil
LimitationRequires a safe switch or route around its targeting arc

Chopinator

StatValue
Damage30 Sharp/Fan damage per contact, as listed in the linked item reference
TargetingAlways active, hits anything in melee range
RangeVery short (melee)
Friendly fireYes — will shred you if you walk into it
PowerRequired
Best useMelee enemies entering a narrow, player-free lane
LimitationShort reach and contact risk near normal foot traffic

The blades sit above the floor, so a low enemy such as a Peccary can pass below them; Pests may be hit when they jump. A broken Chopinator stops working rather than disappearing. Repair it before depending on that entrance again. These limits matter more than increasing the number of fans in a lane that the target can simply walk underneath.

Laser Tripmine

StatValue
Damage600 (explosive)
TargetingTriggered when laser beam is broken
RangePlace across a crossing point and confirm the visible trigger line in your current game
Friendly fireKeep players away from the trigger and blast area; player damage is not established by the cited item page
PowerThe cited item page does not specify an external power requirement; test the placed device before depending on it
ConsumableYes — destroyed on trigger
Best useA one-way choke point where a single detonation is worth the cost
LimitationConsumed on activation

Do not plan a route around an assumed adjustable beam length. Place one mine, inspect the visible line, and leave a separate path for teammates to use. Because the cited item page confirms an explosive attack but not its exact effect on players or nearby structures, keep both out of the detonation area. This precaution does not claim a measured blast radius or friendly-fire rule.

Laser Turret

StatValue
Damage30 Laser damage per attack
TargetingAuto-aim, ranged
RangeLong
Friendly fireThe official progression reference describes no friendly fire
PowerRequires a Laser Emitter or Laser Prism aimed at its base crystal
Best useLong, unobstructed approach lanes
LimitationLoses function when the laser-power path is interrupted

The Laser Turret item notes state that it does not benefit from additional beams aimed into the base crystal. If it stops firing, first check that the emitter is powered and that one beam still reaches the crystal; adding a second beam is not a documented damage upgrade.

Disc Turret

StatValue
Damage15 per disc
Damage typeSharp
TargetingAuto-aim, ranged
Friendly fireDiscs can hit players and structures in their path or after a bounce
PowerRequired
Best usePredictable, slower targets in a controlled firing lane
LimitationDoes not lead moving targets and can create ricochet risk

X-Ray Tower

StatValue
DamageX-Ray Field effect rather than normal damage
TargetingAutomatic Leyak control
Friendly fireNot established by the cited X-Ray Tower and base-defense pages; verify player interaction before treating its coverage as a safe lane
PowerRequired
Best useForcing a pursuing Leyak to stop and eventually leave Essence
LimitationIt is a specialized tool, not a replacement for general defenses

The power requirement is documented in the Wiki's base-defense table. Test the tower on the same power circuit you expect to use during an assault, and keep ordinary anti-enemy defenses separate from the Leyak response. Do not infer a no-friendly-fire guarantee merely because its listed target is Leyak.

Decision table

DefenseReusableChoose it when
Tesla CoilYesThe approach can be isolated from players and controlled with power
ChopinatorYesEnemies must pass through a narrow lane that players do not use
Laser TurretYesA laser-power path and long sightline are available
Laser TripmineNoOne high-damage trigger is more useful than persistent coverage
Disc TurretYesThe lane limits misses and dangerous ricochets
X-Ray TowerYesThe base needs a dedicated Leyak response

Common Mistakes

MistakeWhy it happensFix
Tesla Coil next to workbenchDidn't realize it hits playersPlace on outer wall, away from pathing
Walking into ChopinatorForgot where you placed itAlways place behind barricades or in doorways you don't use
Treating Disc Turrets as harmlessThey only target hostilesKeep players and structures out of the firing and ricochet path
Using X-Ray Tower as general defenseIts effect is specializedPair Leyak control with a separate defense plan for other enemies
Placing Tripmine in hallway you useForgot it's thereOnly use in one-way enemy corridors
No backup for powered defensesGrid loss disables themAdd enough stored power for the devices that must remain active
