You ran cables everywhere, plugged everything in, and half your devices sit there dark. The wires look connected. The game says otherwise. You have no idea which cable is the broken one because the whole base is a spaghetti mess.

The Solution

Power in Abiotic Factor flows one direction: battery to plug strip to device. Skip a step or reverse a connection and everything downstream dies. This guide covers the exact wiring order, cable types, plug strip limits, and a star topology layout that makes troubleshooting fast.


Power Flow Rules

Before touching a single cable, understand these four rules. Breaking any of them causes dead devices.

  1. Power flows from Battery → Cable → Plug Strip → Device. Always in that order.
  2. Devices cannot connect directly to batteries. A plug strip must sit between them.
  3. Each plug strip has a hard connection limit. Exceeding it gives no error — extra devices just get no power.
  4. Cables have a maximum physical length but no power loss over distance.

That fourth rule surprises people. A 1-meter Basic Cable delivers the same charge as a 10-meter one. Length only matters for whether the cable can physically reach.

The Star Topology Layout

The star topology is the single best wiring pattern for Abiotic Factor bases. One central hub, multiple branches, zero daisy chains.

The structure looks like this:

  • One battery sits in a protected central location.
  • One main plug strip connects directly to that battery via a short cable.
  • From the main plug strip, individual cables run outward to separate zones (rooms, floors, defense perimeters).
  • Each zone gets its own zone plug strip at the cable endpoint.
  • Devices in that zone plug into the zone plug strip.

Why Star Topology Works

If a branch fails — cable gets destroyed, zone plug strip breaks — only that zone loses power. Every other zone stays lit. You trace the dead branch from the zone plug strip backward to the main strip. One cable, one connection point. Diagnosis takes seconds.

Compare that to a daisy chain where Plug Strip A feeds Plug Strip B feeds Plug Strip C. If B breaks, C also dies, and you have to check every link in the chain to find the break.

Step-by-Step Wiring Process

Follow this exact order. Skipping steps causes silent failures.

  1. Place the battery in a central, protected room. Interior walls on all sides. Enemies should never reach it.
  2. Place the main plug strip within 2 meters of the battery. Short cable, minimal exposure.
  3. Connect battery to main plug strip using a Basic Cable. This is your trunk line.
  4. Plan your zones. Each room or functional area gets one branch. Example zones: bedroom, kitchen, armory, defense perimeter, crafting hall.
  5. Run one cable per zone from the main plug strip outward. Use Reinforced or Fiber Optic cables for distant rooms.
  6. Place a zone plug strip at each cable endpoint, inside the zone it serves.
  7. Plug devices into their zone strip. Lights, benches, turrets, refrigerators — each one into the nearest zone strip.
  8. Test every device. Interact with each one and check for the powered indicator. If it is dark, trace the chain backward.

This is where most bases fail. Players plug 8 devices into a Basic Plug Strip rated for 3. The game gives no warning. Devices 4 through 8 just sit there, unpowered.

Count your devices before choosing a strip. A crafting room with a Weapons Bench, Chemistry Station, Charger, and two Lights needs 5 slots — that is an Industrial strip minimum.

If you are borderline, upgrade the strip. One Industrial strip costs less than rewiring a zone later.

Battery Sizing and Backup Strategy

A single battery powering your entire base is a single point of failure. When it drains, everything dies at once. Use tiered batteries based on priority.

The critical battery should connect only to defense devices. No lights. No benches. When power runs low, you want turrets firing while you scramble to recharge.

Every powered device draws 1 charge per 5 seconds. That means:

These numbers show why splitting circuits matters. Fifteen devices on one Basic Battery gives you 3 minutes of power. Split those across three circuits with separate batteries and each circuit lasts 14 minutes.

Troubleshooting Dead Devices

When something loses power, do not randomly replug cables. Trace the chain in order.

Step 1: Check the device. Interact with it. Does it show "No Power" or "Not Connected"? No Power means the circuit is dead. Not Connected means the device is not plugged into a strip.

Step 2: Check the zone plug strip. Is it powered? If the strip itself is dark, the problem is upstream — the cable or main strip.

Step 3: Check the cable. Walk the cable from zone strip back to main strip. Look for disconnected endpoints. Cables sometimes decouple after base damage or enemy attacks.

Step 4: Check the main plug strip. Is it receiving power from the battery? If not, check the trunk cable.

Step 5: Check the battery. Is it charged? Interact to see remaining charge. A drained battery needs manual recharge or replacement.

Advanced: Multi-Floor Wiring

Multi-floor bases need vertical cable runs. The game allows cables through floors and ceilings, but they can be hard to trace.

Use this pattern for vertical wiring:

  • Place the battery on the most defensible floor (usually middle).
  • Run one vertical cable per floor, straight up or down.
  • Each floor gets its own plug strip hub.
  • From the floor hub, branch horizontally using the standard star pattern.
