Power system visual guide: wiring, batteries, and overnight setups

SVG diagrams showing how to wire power in Abiotic Factor. Covers plug strips, battery placement, cable reroutes, and the optimal layout to keep machines running at night.

Power in the GATE facility is free and infinite during the day. At 9:00 PM it shuts off. At 6:00 AM it comes back. That 9-hour window is the problem.

Batteries store daytime power for nighttime use, but most players wire them wrong and get 10 minutes of runtime instead of the full night. This guide shows you the correct topology.

The power schedule

TimeStateWhat happens
6:00 AMPower ONAll plug sockets energize, batteries charge
9:00 PMPower OFFSockets die, security bots patrol, batteries discharge
9 hoursOvernightOnly battery-powered devices work

Core components

ComponentMaterialsFunction
Plug Socket(facility built-in)Source of infinite daytime power
Battery (Makeshift)1 Coil, 2 Metal Scrap, 1 Energy BrickStores power, feeds one device line
Plug Strip1 Power Supply Unit, 1 Coil, 2 Metal ScrapSplits one wire into multiple outputs
Cable Reroute1 Tech Scrap (per placement)Extends wire reach to distant devices
Lever1 Metal Scrap, 1 Metal PipeOn/off switch for a wire segment

Wiring topology: wrong vs right

Wrong: battery before the split

Wrong topology: Socket → Battery → Plug Strip → Multiple devices (battery drains fast)SocketBatteryPlug StripCrafting BenchCooking PotLights1 battery feeds ALL devices → drains in minutes

Right: battery per device

Correct topology: Socket → Plug Strip → Battery per device (each device gets full battery life)SocketPlug StripBatteryBatteryBatteryCrafting BenchCooking PotLightsEach device has dedicated battery → full night runtime

Why this matters: A battery drains proportional to the number of devices drawing from it. One battery feeding three devices lasts 1/3 as long. Split first, then battery each line.

Star topology (recommended base layout)

Star topology: central plug strip with battery branches to each device zoneSocketPlug Strip HubCraftingDefenseCookingLightsChemistryStorageEach branch: Plug Strip → Battery → Device

Each branch follows the pattern: Plug Strip → Battery → Device. Add a Lever before non-essential branches (lights, storage) to save battery for crafting at night.

Battery math

ScenarioDevicesBattery drainEstimated runtime
1 Battery → 1 Crafting Bench1NormalFull night (9 hours)
1 Battery → 2 devices22× faster~4.5 hours
1 Battery → 3 devices33× faster~3 hours
2 Batteries series → 1 device1Half rate eachFull night + reserve
1 Battery → Plug Strip → 5 devices55× faster~1.5 hours

Rule of thumb: 1 battery per device for overnight coverage. Stack 2 batteries in series if you need guaranteed all-night operation.

How to extend wires

Cable Reroutes let you reach distant devices from a single socket:

  1. Hold a plug from any powered component
  2. Look at a flat surface — blue square appears
  3. Left-click to place Cable Reroute (costs 1 Tech Scrap)
  4. Grab the output plug and continue to next device or reroute

No practical limit on reroute chain length. Use this to power devices in other rooms from one socket.

Portal World power

Some Portal Worlds have plug sockets (often attached to portable generators). You can build a crafting base inside a Portal World using these. Structures survive portal resets — only resources and enemies respawn.

Common Mistakes

MistakeWhy it happensHow to avoid
Battery before plug stripIntuition says "store first, distribute later"Split first, battery each branch
Daisy-chaining 5 batteries in seriesThinks more = betterDiminishing returns; use 1-2 per device
No lever for non-essential devicesEverything draws all nightLever off lights/storage during night crafting
Building far from socketRuns out of Tech Scrap for reroutesPlan base around socket locations
Ignoring Portal World socketsDidn't realize they existSome portal worlds have free power for remote bases
