GATE Security Crate key route: trade, choose a crate, and reuse it
Plan the GATE Security Key trade, select an accessible Security Crate, protect the valuable contents, and reuse the unlocked crate as shielded storage.
Original exploration route

Key trade and route goal
Warren Bunning trades one GATE Security Key for one Nyxshade Seed. The key opens a GATE Security Crate. Because the crate can be packaged after unlocking and reused as storage with full radiation shielding, the route can produce both loot and a durable base upgrade.
Choose the crate before trading
The current crate source lists locations across Office, Manufacturing West, Cascade Laboratories, Security, Hydroplant, and Reactors. Choose the earliest crate that the save can reach safely; a later crate is not inherently better when the documented contents are the same.
| Decision | Check | Best outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Seed trade | Nyxshade Seed is available and not reserved | Key acquired without blocking another plan |
| Crate selection | Access tier and sector route are already open | No extra progression gate is added |
| Inventory | Space exists for the documented contents | Valuable gear is not left behind |
| Base use | A shielded storage zone is prepared | The packaged crate has an immediate purpose |
Route procedure
- Verify the current Warren Bunning trade and obtain the key.
- Select one crate from the current source location list.
- Clear only the access needed to reach that crate.
- Unlock it and move the contents into protected inventory space.
- Package the empty crate if its storage value justifies the carry burden.
- Place it in the planned hazardous-material zone at base.
Failure recovery
- The chosen crate needs a higher hacker tier. Select an accessible crate from an earlier sector instead of forcing the gate.
- Inventory is full. Preserve the Night Pass, repair kits, security weapon, ammunition, and armor listed by the current crate source before generic loot.
- The crate cannot be packaged. Confirm it is unlocked and emptied.
- The seed is needed elsewhere. Delay the trade; the key route is valuable but should not silently consume a progression-critical resource.
Completion condition
The route is complete when the key has opened the selected crate, the contents are secured, and the empty crate is either deliberately reused or left for a later pickup. Compare storage options in the crate layout guide and use the Blacksmith guide for separate trade chains.
Compare access cost, not imagined loot quality
The crate source describes a consistent content pool, so selecting a crate should be an access decision. An Office crate that is already on a safe route can be a better first target than a later-sector crate behind combat, hacker, or mobility requirements. Review the exact location notes and select the one with the fewest new dependencies for the current save.
Some listed crates require a hacker tier, a special movement method, or deeper sector progress. Treat those requirements as separate projects. Do not carry a key through a dangerous route only to discover that the final room needs an unprepared access tool. The pre-trip note should name the sector, landmark, access requirement, and planned return.
The reusable crate changes the return calculation. Its documented storage and radiation shielding make it useful for a hazardous-material zone, but its weight can make extraction harder. Decide before opening whether the container will be packaged immediately, left empty for another trip, or used near the current location. That decision prevents valuable loot and a heavy container from competing unexpectedly for carrying capacity.
At base, label the crate by function rather than origin. If it stores Power Cells or another radioactive material, keep it in the shielded inventory path and verify nearby workstations do not encourage players to hold hazardous items while sorting. The route has then produced a safer system, not just a one-time loot event.
Keep a key ledger
Record each acquired key, the crate selected for it, the access requirement, and whether the reusable crate was extracted. This is especially useful in co-op, where one player may obtain a key while another assumes it has already been spent. The ledger should describe only the current save; it is not evidence that every crate appears in the same progression order.
If Warren Bunning's documented trade is used, record the Nyxshade Seed as the cost before the exchange. That makes the choice visible to players who may need the seed for another purpose. A key found through exploration and a key obtained through trade lead to the same unlock decision, but their opportunity costs are not the same.
After extraction, confirm the crate is empty before packaging it and assign its base purpose before placing it. This closes the route with a usable storage result instead of adding another unlabeled container to the floor.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Why it happens | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Trading the Nyxshade Seed without checking other uses | Key route feels urgent | Verify the seed is not reserved for another progression chain before trading |
| Picking a crate behind an unresolved hacker gate | Later sector sounds like better loot | Contents are consistent across crates; pick the one your current access can reach |
| Full inventory when the crate opens | Player forgot to clear space before the trip | Reserve slots for Night Pass, repair kits, security weapon, ammo, and armor |
| Trying to package a crate that still has items inside | Rushed after looting | Empty every slot, then package; the game will not let you pack a non-empty crate |
| Carrying the heavy crate through a combat zone | Wanted to extract it in one trip | Clear the return path first, or leave the crate for a dedicated extraction run |
| No record of which crates are already opened | Co-op partner used the key last session | Keep a key ledger: key source, crate location, date opened, crate extracted or not |
| Placing the crate at base without a label or purpose | Just dropped it on the floor | Assign it to hazardous-material storage; its radiation shielding is the real value |
| Assuming every crate spawns in the same order each save | Guide listed a fixed sequence | Crate availability depends on sector access, not a universal progression order |
