Player Note: Lab Rat 7: Radiation mistakes are usually planning mistakes. I used to ask, "Do I have Hazmat gear?" The better question is, "How long am I staying, what am I carrying home, and where do I stop if the route gets worse?"
What radiation protection actually needs to solve
Radiation in Abiotic Factor is not only an environmental hazard. It also matters when you carry radioactive items, route through lab sectors, handle Power Cells, or bring back materials that should not sit in ordinary storage.
This guide is not a full armor tier list. Use armor protection and radiation if you need broad armor choice advice. This page is the practical radiation checklist: before the route, during the route, and after the items reach base.
Pre-route radiation checklist
| Check | Ready state | If not ready |
|---|---|---|
| Suit or protection plan | You know which gear handles the route's radiation pressure | Delay the run or shorten it to scouting only |
| Anti-radiation medicine | Iodine Tablets or other radiation recovery are accessible | Do not enter a long radiation route |
| Storage destination | Hazard Crate or dedicated hazard storage is ready | Build storage before collecting radioactive items |
| Carry route | You know the shortest path from pickup to storage | Mark the route before taking the item |
| Retreat trigger | You know when the trip ends | Decide the stop condition before entry |
The checklist is intentionally conservative. Radiation deaths often happen after the main objective is already complete, when the player keeps looting because the route still feels manageable.
Hazmat Suit use without overconfidence
The official Hazmat Suit reference describes the Hazmat Suit buff as reducing radiation absorbed by 90 percent. That makes Hazmat coverage important, but it does not mean every radiation route should become a long mixed-objective run.
Use Hazmat gear for a defined job:
| Route job | Hazmat role | Stop condition |
|---|---|---|
| Scout a radiation area | Buys time to learn landmarks | Leave after confirming the next anchor |
| Carry radioactive loot | Reduces risk while moving to storage | Deposit before doing anything else |
| Push a lab route | Supports the main path through radiation pressure | Leave when suit durability or healing margin feels thin |
| Recover a corpse | Keeps the recovery path survivable | Recover items and return, no rematch |
Hazmat gear should make a route safer. It should not be used as permission to ignore route discipline.
Anti-radiation medicine belongs in the hotbar plan
Radiation recovery items are most useful when you can reach them quickly. If the medicine is buried under loot, you may not use it until the route has already failed.
| Situation | Better response |
|---|---|
| Radiation warning appears early | Leave or shorten the route immediately |
| Radiation comes from carried items | Move directly to storage before side looting |
| Medicine is used during the approach | Treat the main route as weaker and reduce the objective |
| No medicine remains | Stop pushing radiation zones until restocked |
Do not spend anti-radiation medicine to justify a route that was already too long. Use it to recover from a mistake, then correct the route.
Carrying radioactive items safely
Radioactive carrying should be direct: pickup, shortest known path, storage.
- Clear inventory space before pickup.
- Confirm where the item will be stored.
- Pick up the item only when the route home is open.
- Deposit it before sorting normal loot.
- Recheck health, suit durability, and medicine before starting another task.
This same rule applies to Power Cells, radiation-heavy lab materials, or any route where the item itself changes the safety plan. If the carry path is not known, scout first and collect second.
Storage after a radiation route
Do not let radioactive items land in the general arrival crate. The storage planning guide separates normal storage from Hazard Crate handling for this reason.
| Returned with | Store first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Power Cell | Hazard or route-critical storage | Keeps the next vehicle or craft visible |
| Radioactive material | Hazard Crate | Prevents unsafe handling paths |
| Mixed loot plus hazard item | Hazard item first | Sorting ordinary loot can wait |
| Co-op haul | Announce the hazard item location | Stops another player from handling it casually |
The right storage habit turns a dangerous route into stable progress. The wrong habit moves the danger from the sector into the base.
Common mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Entering because "I have a Hazmat Suit" | Define the objective and stop condition first |
| Carrying radioactive loot through side rooms | Deposit the item before continuing |
| Saving medicine until too late | Put recovery items where they can be used immediately |
| Treating corpse recovery as a rematch | Recover, bank, repair, then decide separately |
| Mixing hazard storage with general storage | Keep a visible hazard-only container |
Radiation planning is mostly about refusing extra objectives. The route is good when the dangerous item or hazard zone has one clear purpose and one clear exit.
