What reaching the Surface Tunnel actually accomplishes

The Surface Tunnel is the first escape lead in Manufacturing West, not the working exit to Cascade Laboratories. The objective begins after talking to the Blacksmith. The journal then points through the mines and security doors toward the tunnel. At the destination, the tunnel is collapsed and Hasta Tria is present. Talking to Hasta completes this search and changes the objective to finding Frake.

This distinction prevents two common problems. First, players do not need to search for an unsupported forcefield or risky drop to finish the objective. Second, a blocked tunnel is not a failed route. It is the story result that sends the player to Frake, the Blacksmith's replacement parts, the three electron pumps, and the Synchrotron.

Prerequisites and preparation

Do not invent a fixed armor rating, number of Bandages, or mask requirement for every save. Bring equipment appropriate to the enemies and hazards already encountered in Manufacturing West, then set a retreat trigger based on the group's actual supplies.

Objective chain: know what should update

This table is the page's main output. If the active objective has already moved to Find Frake, the Surface Tunnel route is complete even though no physical escape opened there.

Route checkpoints from Blacksmith to Surface Tunnel

Checkpoint 1: finish the Blacksmith conversation

Talk to the Blacksmith until the active objective changes. The Manufacturing West journal entry "Crafty" records two useful facts: the Blacksmith directs the player toward the Surface Tunnel, and security doors near his workshop need to be hacked. This is the correct point to verify Tier 2 clearance rather than carrying an unrelated key or waiting for a tram unlock.

Before leaving, identify the workshop as the return point. If the next objective does not appear, reopen the conversation and check the objective log before moving deeper.

Checkpoint passed: Find the Surface Tunnel is active and the route back to the Blacksmith is known.

Checkpoint 2: open the mine-side security route

Follow the industrial route toward the old mines and inspect the keypad color on the required security door. Manufacturing West primarily uses Orange Level 2 clearance, bypassed by Keypad Hacker Tier 2. The hacker is reusable gear that upgrades from the earlier tier; it is not a single-use card.

If the door does not open, stop and diagnose the actual gate. Confirm the hacker is equipped, the clearance is within its capability, and the objective was triggered. Do not search for a bridge jump or environmental exploit simply because an old turn list bypassed the documented route.

Checkpoint passed: the player has entered the mine route beyond the relevant security door and can reverse to the workshop.

Checkpoint 3: use mine names and NPC evidence

The journal entry "He Stays, I Go" points through the mines toward the Surface Tunnel. A separate entry, "Through the Mines," comes from talking to Kovak in a small mine tunnel near the destination and reinforces the security-door route.

Use Kovak as an optional confirmation that the player is near the correct branch. The route does not require looting every Mine Crate, Supply Room, or Shipping container. Those are separate resource objectives that can fill the inventory before the story conversation.

At each split, keep the last two checkpoints in order: Blacksmith workshop, security door, mine tunnel, Surface Tunnel. If the player cannot name the last one, return before opening another branch.

Checkpoint passed: Kovak's tunnel or the clearly collapsed Surface Tunnel area is reached without losing the return route.

Checkpoint 4: talk to Hasta at the collapse

The current Hasta Tria page places him at the collapsed Surface Tunnel on this first encounter. Talk to him and then check the active objective. The expected change is from Find the Surface Tunnel to Find Frake.

Do not wait for the rubble to disappear. Do not look for a large colored forcefield as the completion trigger. The conversation and objective update are the verifiable outcome.

Checkpoint passed: Find Frake is active.

What happens after the tunnel is blocked

The collapsed tunnel proves the first escape route is unusable. The next path is a new objective chain:

1. Locate and talk to Frake.
2. Return to the Blacksmith after Frake explains the pump plan.
3. Obtain the three replacement parts through the Blacksmith's documented exchanges.
4. Follow the yellow, green, and red pipes to the corresponding electron pumps.
5. Install the matching parts.
6. Activate the Synchrotron after all three pumps are repaired.
7. Use the resulting route toward Cascade Laboratories.

The journal entry "Get Parts, Follow the Pipes" explicitly names the red, yellow, and green pipe system. That is the correct navigation aid for the later repair stage. It should not be folded backward into the Surface Tunnel search.

Surface route versus Synchrotron route

Keeping these outputs separate gives each trip a stop condition. A player who has just met Hasta can safely return, restock, and begin the Frake search rather than forcing the entire sector into one run.

Route decisions by player state

Recovery advice and completion check

Lost in Manufacturing West: return to a named hub such as the Blacksmith workshop, then rebuild the route through the security door and mines. Do not use enemy positions as permanent landmarks because encounters can change.

Blocked by clearance: read the keypad color. Orange is Level 2. If the Tier 2 hacker recipe is not available, revisit the Blacksmith conversation and the current Tier 2 unlock instructions.

Reached a dead end without Hasta: verify that the location is the collapsed Surface Tunnel, not another mine or shipping branch. Use Kovak's nearby tunnel and the journal entry as confirmation.

Objective remains Find the Surface Tunnel: interact with Hasta and complete the dialogue. Merely seeing the collapse is not the documented completion trigger.

Trying to enter Labs from the collapse: stop. The active story chain should now direct the player to Frake, the Blacksmith, the pumps, and the Synchrotron.

The route is complete when:

• The Blacksmith conversation has activated the Surface Tunnel objective.
• The mine-side security route is opened with the appropriate clearance tool.
• The player reaches the collapsed tunnel and identifies Hasta Tria.
• Talking to Hasta changes the active objective to Find Frake.
• The blocked tunnel is recorded as an intentional story result, not a broken exit.
• The player can return to a known Manufacturing West checkpoint.
• The later colored-pipe pump loop is understood as a separate objective.

This completion state is deliberately modest and verifiable. It advances the story without adding an unsupported shortcut, landmark, hazard, or escape mechanic.
