Train World farming: Steel Cable and industrial loot routes
Steel Cable is the bottleneck material that gates half your crafting progression, and Train World is the concentrated source you have been sleeping on.
The Problem
âI need Steel Cable for everything but I can never find enough. Someone mentioned Train World?â
The Problem
I need Steel Cable for everything but I can never find enough. Someone mentioned Train World?
The Solution
Steel Cable is one of the most demanded crafting materials in the mid-to-late game. It appears in recipes for Industrial Batteries, upgraded workstations, Cable Reroute (wire extension tool), and advanced traps. Running out of Steel Cable means your power grid (see star topology setup), defenses, and crafting queue all stall at once.
Why Train World Train World is a Portal World (see Portal Worlds) accessible from the Manufacturing Sector. Its environment â train cars, cargo containers, industrial debris â contains a much higher concentration of Steel Cable loot sources than any facility sector. Wooden boxes, Mine Crates, and industrial debris piles inside Train World drop Steel Cable at a rate that makes it the most efficient single-source farm.
Clear, Then Loot The guards in Train World patrol near the high-density loot zones. Do not try to loot and fight simultaneously â you will be interrupted every 20 seconds and take chip damage that adds up. Clear every enemy in the immediate area first. Then break containers systematically. The order matters because breaking containers makes noise that can pull aggro from guards you missed.
Secondary Loot While Steel Cable is the primary target, Train World also drops Circuit Boards, Staplers, Desk Phones, and generic office/industrial materials at higher rates than facility sectors. These are not the reason you came â but filling remaining backpack space with them after securing your Steel Cable target makes the run more efficient.
Portal Reset Mechanic Portal Worlds reset on a timer. All containers, enemies, and loot inside refresh. This means Train World is not a one-time run â it is a farming (see farming guide) loop. Mark your calendar: every reset cycle, run Train World for Steel Cable before crafting anything that consumes it. Stockpile Steel Cable in a dedicated Resource Crate at base. Running the portal on cooldown means you never craft from scarcity.
Efficient Extraction Steel Cable is heavy. Equip your best backpack before the run â Military Pack (+12 slots, 20% weight reduction) at minimum, Hiking Pack (+18 slots, 42% weight reduction) ideally. Put Steel Cable stacks on the hotbar for the 25% weight reduction bonus during the walk back. If you are over-encumbered, drop secondary loot (Desk Phones, Staplers) before dropping Steel Cable â the secondary items are replaceable from Office Sector runs; Steel Cable concentration anywhere else is far lower.
Pair with Other Portal Runs Train World's reset timer is independent of other Portal Worlds. Rotate your farming: Train World for Steel Cable â Rise for Medkits â Flathill for Power Cells. Each reset cycle, hit the portal whose resource you are lowest on. This rotation keeps all three bottleneck resources stocked without waiting for any single portal to refresh.
Step-by-Step
- Access Train World from the Manufacturing Sector portal hub.
- Enter with a cleared inventory â wear your best backpack (Military minimum, Hiking ideal) and carry one weapon plus basic medical supplies.
- Clear all patrolling guards near the loot zone before breaking any containers.
- Break wooden boxes and Mine Crates systematically, starting from the nearest to the exit for efficient extraction.
- Fill backpack with Steel Cable first. Use hotbar slots for heavy stacks.
- If space remains after Steel Cable target is met, grab Circuit Boards and Staplers as secondary loot.
- Extract directly to base. Deposit Steel Cable in a dedicated Resource Crate. Do not side-track into other sectors while carrying a full load.
- Repeat on portal reset cooldown. Rotate with other portal farms (Rise for Medkits, Flathill for Power Cells) to keep all resources stocked.
Common Mistakes
- Looting and fighting simultaneously â clear enemies first, then break containers without interruption.
- Entering with a nearly full inventory â you came for Steel Cable; make space before stepping through the portal.
- Side-looting Office Sector trash on the walk home while carrying a full Steel Cable haul â extract directly, deposit, then go back for secondary loot separately.
- Waiting until you are out of Steel Cable to run Train World â run it on cooldown and stockpile, so crafting never stalls waiting for materials.
