Traveling trader stock planning for Grayson and Marion

Plan Abiotic Factor traveling-trader visits around verified exchanges, limited stock, unlocks, inventory space, and a useful fallback route.

Make a traveling-trader route useful even when the trader or desired stock is unavailable. Source basis: the references listed on this page, checked for game version 1.4. This original planning diagram is not to scale and is not copied game or wiki media.

Treat availability as part of the cost

The official Trading page distinguishes fixed-place NPCs from traveling traders such as Grayson Isling and Marion. Traveling-trader items often have limited stock that replenishes over time. That creates two constraints beyond the item price: the trader must be available, and the desired stock must be present.

A good plan therefore has two outcomes. The primary outcome completes the exchange. The fallback outcome advances another task in the same broad route if the trader or stock is unavailable. Without a fallback, every failed encounter turns travel time into a pure loss.

Trip statePrimary actionFallback action
Trader found, row unlocked, stock sufficientComplete planned exchangesContinue nearby route only with protected return supplies
Trader found, row lockedRecord current gate; keep inputComplete a progression task
Trader found, stock insufficientBuy only assigned priorityGather a nearby confirmed resource

Prepare the exact exchange card

Before leaving base, record one card per desired output. Do not carry every item that appears anywhere in the trader catalog.

  1. Select the exact output and trader from the current source.
  2. Record the output per action and input per action.
  3. Confirm the unlock condition against the current save.
  4. Enter the intended action count in the Trader Exchange Planner.
  5. Compare the action count with listed stock where the source provides it.
  6. Reserve inventory slots for the output and keep emergency supplies separate.
  7. Choose a stop-search checkpoint and a fallback task.

For Grayson's reviewed ammunition listings, one exchange can return several rounds. That makes the distinction between action count and output quantity important. Stock applies to the listed transaction, while the planner multiplies the returned units.

Read limited stock conservatively

A listed stock value is a cap for the current planning window, not proof that the same quantity will be present when the player arrives. Another player, previous interaction, or a game update can change the visible state. A blank stock value is not converted into “unlimited” on this site; it means no limit was recorded in the reviewed row.

Use three quantities:

QuantityMeaning
Desired actionsHow many times the plan wants to use the row
Listed stockPublished transaction count where available
Committed actionsThe smaller amount the current trip will rely on

Carry input for committed actions first. Extra input can remain at base unless it has another purpose on the route. This keeps limited inventory from being occupied by a speculative second batch.

The source states that traveling stock often replenishes over time, but do not build a public countdown from that sentence. Unless the current source documents an exact timer and its conditions, record “return later” rather than a fabricated number of minutes or days.

Use unlocks to avoid premature trips

Grayson's table includes rows tied to entering Manufacturing West, entering Containment Block Dirac, and reaching the central part of the Hydroplant dam. Those gates place exchanges at different progression stages. A player who has met Grayson has not necessarily exposed every row.

Compare the desired output with the source's unlock column. If the condition is not complete, convert the route into a progression trip and leave the exchange input protected at base. Carrying it cannot unlock the row.

Marion also has a dedicated source page. Use it to verify the current exchange pair, stock, and gate rather than copying Grayson's assumptions to another traveling trader. “Traveling” describes availability behavior; it does not mean the two NPCs share inventory or unlocks.

Build a bounded search route

The route should have a start, a small number of confirmed checks, and a stopping condition. This page does not publish an exact patrol path because a path must be supported by the current location source and game version. Instead, add current confirmed locations to the trip card immediately before departure.

Route fieldDecision
Last confirmed informationWhere the current source or save places the trader
CheckpointsOnly locations supported for this version
Search limitPoint after which the fallback is more valuable
Fallback taskProgression, gathering, or maintenance on the same route
Return reserveFood, healing, durability, and free inventory needed to exit

Do not chase the trader past the point where the group can no longer complete its fallback or return safely. Availability is uncertain; the loss limit should not be.

Prioritize when stock is lower than planned

If several outputs are desired, rank them before seeing the trade screen. Use the next objective, replaceability of the input, and whether the output removes a current blocker.

  1. Buy the output required for an active progression or repair task.
  2. Protect inputs needed for another confirmed recipe or objective.
  3. Buy route supplies only when the next route is scheduled.
  4. Leave optional storage conversions for a later stock cycle.

This ranking is editorial and save-specific. It does not label an item globally best. A repair kit is important when it returns a required weapon to service and optional when no compatible damaged weapon exists.

Recover from a failed visit

If the trader is absent, execute the fallback and stop expanding the search. If the trader is present but the row is missing, verify the unlock. If the row is present but stock is short, reduce the action count and preserve the remaining input. If the exchange pair differs from the current source, do not test with a scarce item merely to resolve the discrepancy.

Record four facts after the route: save progression, where the trader was or was not checked, stock visible for the desired row, and source version. An isolated observation is useful for the next trip but should not be presented as universal spawn behavior.

Completion condition

A traveling-trader plan is ready when the desired row and unlock are verified, input and output totals are calculated, stock is treated as a limit rather than a promise, inventory space is reserved, and the route has both a stopping point and a useful fallback.

The trip succeeds either by completing the assigned exchanges or by reaching the fallback objective without consuming protected inputs. That definition makes the plan resilient to the uncertainty that distinguishes a traveling trader from Warren or The Blacksmith.

Use the unlock matrix when a row is missing. Use the fixed-trader priority guide when the destination is predictable and the harder question is whether an exchange is worth its input.
