Crafting Bench upgrades: priority guide, storage access, and base safety

How to choose Crafting Bench upgrades in Abiotic Factor, when Portal Suppression, Item Transporter, and Dioxohealer matter, and how to avoid wasting power on the wrong upgrade order.

Failure mode

This site-generated diagram summarizes the decision flow used by the guide. It is an original planning aid, not copied game or wiki media.

Player Note: Lab Rat 7: The Crafting Bench looks like a station, but its upgrades change how the base works. Once storage access, portal suppression, and healing enter the setup, the bench becomes the center of the room rather than another object against the wall.

The practical upgrade rule

Choose Crafting Bench upgrades by the problem you are trying to remove:

If your problem is...Prioritize...Why
Portal Storms interrupt base workPortal Suppression FieldThe bench can suppress Portal Storms near it.
Crafting requires constant crate tripsItem TransporterThe bench can pull materials from nearby valid storage.
You burn healing items after routine fightsDioxohealerThe upgrade passively heals nearby players, with farmable plants improving the effect.
You are upgrading gear rather than building base itemsEnhancement BenchIt handles equipment enhancement and can pull from nearby storage like an Item Transporter bench.

That is better than a fixed "always do this first" list. A solo player with a messy storage room needs Item Transporter sooner. A co-op group getting hit by Portal Storm interruptions needs suppression sooner. A base with regular post-fight recovery problems gets more from Dioxohealer.

Portal Suppression Field

The Portal Suppression Field is the highest-safety upgrade when Portal Storms are the thing damaging your base rhythm. The official Crafting Bench page describes the bench as suppressing Portal Storms near it once this upgrade is active.

Use it early when:

SituationWhy suppression helps
Your bench room is also your sleeping and crafting roomInterruptions happen in the exact place where you are least prepared.
Co-op players idle around the baseMore players spending time at base means more chances for base events to matter.
You have valuable storage clustered around the benchA safe work area protects the systems that keep the run going.

Do not treat suppression as a full defense plan. It is a protection layer for Portal Storm behavior around the bench. You still need sensible room selection, exit paths, and basic weapons.

Item Transporter

Item Transporter is the highest-efficiency upgrade. It turns organized nearby storage into recipe access. Instead of carrying every part to the bench, you keep recipe materials in valid storage near the work area and let the bench read from that storage.

The 1.0.0 update matters here: display-style stands are no longer pulled from as normal storage. For crafting materials, use real crates. For looks, use display stands.

Verification check:

  1. Put a known recipe input in a nearby crate.
  2. Open a recipe that needs that input.
  3. Confirm the bench recognizes it without moving it into your inventory.
  4. If it does not, move the crate closer or use a different storage object.

Because range awareness can be hard to read in normal play, this direct recipe test is more reliable than guessing.

Dioxohealer

Dioxohealer is a recovery upgrade. The official references describe passive healing near an upgraded Crafting Bench, with farmable plants improving the effect. That makes it strongest in a base where players return damaged often but do not want to spend medical items after every minor route.

Prioritize it when:

Base patternDioxohealer value
You fight often near homeReduces small recovery costs between runs.
You have farming space near the benchPlants improve the healing setup.
Co-op players regroup at one baseMultiple players benefit from one recovery zone.

Delay it when food, water, power, or storage are still disorganized. Healing is useful, but it does not fix a base that cannot craft, store, or defend itself.

Enhancement Bench is not the same decision

The Enhancement Bench belongs in the same planning conversation because it affects gear progression. It is not simply another Crafting Bench upgrade. The official Enhancement Bench page describes it as functioning like a Crafting Bench with Item Transporter behavior for nearby storage, but its purpose is equipment enhancement.

Use this split:

NeedStation
Build base items, survival items, and normal craftablesCrafting Bench
Improve weapons, armor, or enhancement-eligible gearEnhancement Bench
Pull materials from nearby storage for normal recipesCrafting Bench with Item Transporter
Pull materials for enhancement workflowsEnhancement Bench near organized storage

Place the Enhancement Bench near the same organized storage zone if possible. That prevents gear upgrades from creating a second pile of unsorted materials.

Recommended upgrade order by base state

Base stateBest next upgradeReason
Base gets Portal Storm interruptionsPortal Suppression FieldSafety problem beats convenience.
Base is safe but crafting is slowItem TransporterRemoves repetitive crate trips.
Storage is organized and routes cause chip damageDioxohealerConverts the bench area into a recovery zone.
Gear enhancement becomes the bottleneckEnhancement BenchMoves progression from base building to item upgrades.

If two problems are equally painful, solve safety before speed. A fast crafting room that is unsafe still loses time.

Power and placement checks

Before adding or relying on an upgrade, run three checks:

CheckWhat to verify
PowerThe bench and surrounding systems stay active after the upgrade is installed.
PlacementStorage, plants, and player recovery spots are close enough to benefit.
WorkflowThe upgrade removes a repeated task you actually perform.

Avoid installing upgrades just because the menu allows it. An upgrade that does not match your base layout becomes visual noise and power pressure.

Common mistakes

MistakeWhy it failsFix
Installing Item Transporter before organizing cratesThe bench can access clutter, but you still cannot find thingsOrganize storage first or alongside the upgrade
Treating display stands as crafting storageUpdate behavior excludes display-style stands from transporter pullingKeep recipe materials in real crates
Placing Dioxohealer away from trafficPlayers miss the healing zonePut recovery space where players already regroup
Assuming suppression replaces defenseOther threats and route mistakes still existKeep exits, weapons, and basic defense planning
Not testing rangeYou only discover failure during craftingUse the recipe-input verification check

Bottom line

The best Crafting Bench upgrade is the one that removes your current bottleneck. Portal Suppression protects the work area, Item Transporter removes storage friction, Dioxohealer reduces recovery cost, and the Enhancement Bench supports gear progression. Build around that sequence instead of treating upgrades as a checklist.
