Crafting Bench upgrades: Healing, Portal Suppression, Storage Access
The Portal Suppression Field is your most important upgrade. Get it before you build traps, or enemies will just spawn on top of your bench anyway.
The Problem
âI see upgrade slots on my Crafting Bench but I have no idea what they do or which ones to prioritize.â
⥠Before You Start
đ What to Bring
Prerequisites
- Have a powered Crafting Bench placed in your base
- Gather Raw Exor Heart, Anteverse Gem, and Military Electronics for the Portal Suppression Field
- Understand that upgrades persist when you package and move the bench
Recommended Loadout
- Portal Suppression Field upgrade (4x Raw Exor Heart + 2x Anteverse Gem + 8x Military Electronics)
- Storage Access Module upgrade
- Healing Module upgrade
Common Mistakes
- 1.Building elaborate trap setups before installing Portal Suppression, then watching enemies spawn on the bench anyway
- 2.Forgetting that upgrades persist through packaging â players waste materials re-crafting modules
- 3.Placing the bench far from storage and not getting the Storage Access Module
The Problem
I see upgrade slots on my Crafting Bench but I have no idea what they do or which ones to prioritize.
The Solution
The upgrade slots on your Crafting Bench are not cosmetic. They turn a simple crafting surface into the nucleus of your entire base. The order you install them determines whether your early game is smooth or constantly interrupted by portal incursions and inventory management.
Upgrade Priority Order
1. Portal Suppression Field (First, Non-Negotiable) This upgrade stops portal-based enemies from materializing near your bench. Without it, you will be mid-craft when a Pest or Exor spawns on top of you. The bench itself creates a safe zone â enemies do not naturally path into its radius â but portal incursions ignore this. The Suppression Field fixes that. Crafting cost is high (Raw Exor Hearts, Anteverse Gems, Military Electronics) because it solves the single most dangerous base threat. Install this before you build a single trap â traps defend against enemies walking in; the Suppression Field prevents them from appearing inside.
2. Storage Access Module (Second) This upgrade lets the Crafting Bench automatically pull ingredients from storage crates placed within its range. Instead of opening five crates to hunt for Metal Scraps, Cloth, and Duct Tape, you open the bench and craft directly. The module scans nearby containers and treats them as one unified inventory for crafting purposes. Stack your crates in rows close to the bench â the range is generous but not infinite. Labeling crates by category still matters for your own sanity, but the module makes mid-craft scavenger hunts obsolete.
3. Healing Module (Third) Passive health regeneration while standing near the bench. This stacks with the Healing Briefcase (see healing guide) for rapid recovery between expeditions. The bench becomes your "return to base, heal up, craft, sleep (see sleep and fatigue guide)" hub â three of the four functions in one spot. Combined with a nearby Bed and Briefcase, you have full recovery and full crafting in a few square meters.
4. Agriculture (see farming guide) Module (Situational) Boosts growth speed for up to six nearby Garden Plots. Worth it once you have a mature farm producing Anteverse Wheat, Super Tomatoes, or other high-value crops. Skip this if you have not built a farm yet â it does nothing without plants in range.
Upgrade Persistence All installed upgrades survive packaging. When you use the "Package" option to move your bench to a new room or new sector, every module comes with it. You do not need to re-craft upgrades after moving. This also means you can pre-install upgrades on a spare bench and deploy it as a forward operating base.
Related Stations
- Enhancement Bench: Handles weapon and armor upgrades (separate station, not a bench module).
- Repair and Salvage Station: Repairs broken gear using materials. Place it next to your bench for a complete crafting corner.
The Ideas System Recipes in Abiotic Factor are not all handed to you. The game uses an "Ideas" system â picking up certain items, finding schematics in the world, talking to NPCs, or leveling skills can unlock new recipes. If a recipe you expect to see is missing, you may need to locate a specific item or reach a skill threshold first. Do not assume the bench is bugged â check whether you have triggered the unlock condition.
Step-by-Step
- Install the Portal Suppression Field before any other upgrade. Materials: Raw Exor Hearts, Anteverse Gems, Military Electronics.
- Once the Suppression Field is active, build traps and walls around the bench radius â now they actually protect against external threats.
- Install the Storage Access Module next. Place Small Crates (18 slots each) in rows within bench range.
- Add the Healing Module for passive recovery at base â pairs with a Healing Briefcase (6 HP/sec) for full recovery.
- Consider the Agriculture Module only after you have at least 4 Garden Plots within range of the bench.
- When moving bases, use the Package option â all upgrades carry over intact. Do not deconstruct and re-craft.
Common Mistakes
- Building walls, traps, and turrets before installing the Portal Suppression Field â enemies appear inside your defenses.
- Placing storage crates across the room from the bench without the Storage Access Module, forcing manual inventory hunting.
- Re-crafting upgrade modules after packaging the bench â they survive packaging. Check the bench slots before spending materials.
- Installing the Agriculture Module with no farm â it provides zero benefit without Garden Plots in range.
- Assuming the bench stops all enemy spawns â it creates a safe zone for pathing enemies, but portal incursions require the Suppression Field specifically.
