Enhancement Bench workflow: upgrade eligible armor and weapons safely
Use the Enhancement Bench without wasting materials: identify eligible gear, stage the required inputs, verify the output, and understand biometric-lock removal.
Original crafting loop
Keep an equipment upgrade reversible until the exact output is confirmed. Source basis: the references listed on this page, checked for game version 1.4. This original planning diagram is not to scale and is not copied game or wiki media.
The Enhancement Bench is an equipment station, not a universal upgrade button. Its documented role is to upgrade supported weapons and gear, change some items into stronger versions, and remove the biometric lock from an Overworld firearm when that firearm receives an eligible upgrade. That last condition matters. The bench does not make every weapon upgradeable, and merely placing a locked gun in the area does not remove its restriction.
This workflow is for players who already have an Enhancement Bench available and want to complete one controlled upgrade without losing track of the input, materials, or result. It does not replace the recipe list shown by the current game build. Treat the bench interface in your save as the final confirmation before spending any item.
What the Enhancement Bench can confirm
The reviewed Enhancement Bench entry supports three useful facts. It upgrades eligible equipment, an eligible firearm upgrade removes that firearm's biometric lock, and the station can draw from nearby storage in a manner similar to a Crafting Bench fitted with Item Transporter. Those facts support a clear workflow, but they do not establish that every item has an upgrade.
| Question | Reliable answer | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Can the bench improve equipment? | Yes, when the item has a supported enhancement recipe | Every armor piece and weapon has a recipe |
| Can it remove a firearm biometric lock? | Yes, as part of upgrading an eligible Overworld firearm | The bench unlocks a firearm without an upgrade |
| Can nearby storage provide ingredients? | The station is documented as collecting from nearby storage | Every container at any distance will be detected |
| Does a higher tier preserve the same role? | Upgrade chains often retain their line's set identity | Every stat and effect remains unchanged |
The practical rule is simple: first prove that the exact item appears as an eligible input, then prove that the expected output is displayed. Only after both checks should the material list become a shopping list.
Prerequisites before selecting an upgrade
Start with a stable work area. Put the Enhancement Bench close enough to your organized equipment storage that you can see what is being consumed. Keep the current armor set or weapon in a dedicated staging container rather than mixed with spare gear. If the station finds nearby storage automatically, that convenience should reduce walking, not obscure which item is the input.
Complete these checks before opening a recipe:
- Repair or inspect the current item so you know which physical piece is being upgraded.
- Empty unrelated materials from the staging container.
- Decide whether you are upgrading one piece as a test or committing an entire set.
- Keep a usable fallback weapon or armor set outside the bench storage area.
- Open the current recipe and compare its displayed output with the intended upgrade name.
A fallback is especially important in co-op. Another player may need the same material, or the team may need to leave before the full set is finished. A partial upgrade should not leave every active player without suitable gear.
Step-by-step upgrade procedure
1. Identify the exact upgrade chain
Use the item name, not appearance or memory. For example, the F.O.R.G.E. line continues through A.E.G.I.S. to A.T.O.M.S. The Makeshift and Maestro lines have their own successors. An item from a separate non-upgrade line should not be forced into one of these sequences because it fills the same armor slot.
The Armor Set Comparison Planner shows the three reviewed lines and marks whether each listed set has a later stage. It is a route filter, not proof that an individual piece is currently in your inventory or unlocked in your save.
2. Check the bench output before gathering everything
Place or select one candidate item and inspect the recipe shown by the bench. Confirm the output name and the required quantities. Patch changes can alter a recipe, and a source page may lag behind the current build. The in-game recipe is therefore the last pre-spend check.
If no recipe appears, stop. Do not gather a remembered material list and assume the interface will change later. Recheck the item name, progression unlocks, and whether the item belongs to an upgradeable line.
3. Stage only the required materials
Move the displayed inputs into one visible container. When upgrading a four piece set, divide the plan by armor slot so the first successful piece does not hide a shortage for the remaining three. The companion armor material checklist organizes the source-listed full-set materials by stage, but the current bench display remains authoritative for the actual transaction.
Do not convert rare materials into another craft until the complete upgrade stage has been checked. A single missing component can leave the player with a mixed set and no full-set bonus.
4. Upgrade one piece and verify it
Run one enhancement first. Move the output out of the bench area and verify:
- The item name matches the expected next stage.
- The armor slot is correct.
- The item appears in the normal equipment interface.
- The remaining recipe still shows the expected inputs for other pieces.
This test costs one piece rather than the entire set. If the recipe or output differs from the guide, pause and use the live interface instead of repeating a possibly outdated instruction.
5. Finish the set or stop at a usable boundary
Complete the remaining pieces only when the materials are already staged. If the full set cannot be completed, decide whether a partial upgrade improves the current route or breaks a set bonus you still need. The correct stopping point depends on the documented line effect and the task ahead, not merely on the higher armor number of one piece.
6. Verify an upgraded firearm separately
For an eligible Overworld firearm, equip the upgraded output without relying on Bio-Metric Armwraps, Bio-Mimic Armwraps, or a Bio-Fusion Imitator. The official bench description says the upgrade removes the biometric lock. This check proves the expected usability in the current save. It does not imply that other locked firearms were changed.
Choosing a line without inventing a fixed progression
The armor upgrade lines solve different documented problems. Makeshift-line sets retain carrying utility. Maestro-line sets retain jump-height utility. F.O.R.G.E.-line sets are much heavier and emphasize heat and bullet-related protection, with A.T.O.M.S. adding Airtight Seal and radiation reduction on its chest piece.
| Route requirement | Line worth checking | Required follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve full-set carrying capacity | Makeshift line | Confirm that the next stage keeps the bonus shown in the current build |
| Preserve full-set jump utility | Maestro line | Check whether the route actually benefits from vertical mobility |
| Heat and bullet-related protection | F.O.R.G.E. line | Accept the much higher full-set weight before committing |
| Airborne and radiation support from this reviewed group | A.T.O.M.S. stage | Verify the exact piece effects and do not treat them as total immunity |
These are conditional matches, not a developer-defined order by sector. A player can enter the same area with a different build, mixed pieces, a suit, or consumable support. The guide should help verify an upgrade choice, not erase those alternatives.
Risks and failure recovery
| Failure | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| No upgrade recipe appears | The item is unsupported, the wrong piece, or the recipe is not unlocked | Keep the item, check its exact page and current progression, then choose another eligible target |
| Nearby materials are not detected | Storage is outside the station's usable pickup area or not a compatible container | Move only the required materials beside the bench and reopen the recipe |
| One upgraded piece breaks a set bonus | The remaining pieces are still from the previous line | Re-equip the old piece or finish the stage only after confirming all remaining materials |
| A firearm remains restricted | The selected transaction did not produce the eligible upgraded firearm expected | Keep the required biometric equipment and recheck the output name before another attempt |
| A source quantity differs from the bench | The live build and reference are out of sync | Follow the current recipe, record the difference, and do not propagate the old number |
Never solve a disagreement by guessing which source is newer. The safe action is to stop before the next transaction and use the current recipe display.
Completion check
An upgrade stage is complete when every intended output has been inspected, the remaining materials have been returned to labeled storage, the player still has a usable fallback, and any promised behavior has been tested. For a firearm, that means checking use without biometric support. For armor, it means checking the equipped set effect rather than assuming four visually matching pieces are enough.
The Enhancement Bench adds value when it turns a known input into a verified output. If the item, recipe, or effect cannot be confirmed in the current save, leave the materials unspent and treat the upgrade as unresolved.
