Abiotic Factor backpack progression comparison: capacity, weight, and utility
Compare backpacks by the constraints that matter on a route: availability, inventory capacity, weight behavior, and special-purpose slots.

Compare capacity and utility instead of assuming later is always better. Source basis: the references listed on this page, checked for game version 1.4. This original planning diagram is not to scale and is not copied game or wiki media.
The choice is not just the largest slot count
A backpack changes how long a route can continue before inventory pressure forces a return. The wiki records capacity, weight effects, and special slots; this page turns those properties into a decision. It does not reproduce every item row. Use the source table for current statistics, then use the method here to decide which property matters for the next trip.
The best backpack for a short objective run can be different from the best one for furniture recovery, food gathering, or a long portal-world clear. A larger bag that creates a different weight problem is not an automatic upgrade.
Compare four constraints

Check all four against the current Backpack and Inventory source pages. Do not compare two bags from memory after a patch, because a capacity or utility change can reverse the result.
Verified progression anchors
The current Backpacks table starts the player with 12 pocket slots, then lists the slot increase and weight reduction for each equipped pack. The rows below are useful comparison anchors, not a claim that every player must follow one upgrade order.

This table exposes why "more slots" is not enough. Security Pack gains three slots over Basic but lists one percentage point less weight reduction. Research, Cold Storage, and Hiking all reach 30 total slots, yet solve radiation, spoilage, or carrying weight differently. Rat Pack reaches the same total with no listed reduction and carries a debuff, so it should not be presented as a universal upgrade.
Choose by expedition type
- Write down the route objective and the items that must leave the base.
- Reserve inventory space for tools, protection, food, healing, and a return method before estimating loot space.
- Decide whether the route is slot-limited or weight-limited.
- Compare only backpacks currently obtainable in the save.
- Run the route once and note what actually forced the return.
If empty slots remained but movement or carry pressure became the problem, adding capacity alone will not solve it. If weight remained manageable while many one-off items filled the grid, capacity is the better upgrade criterion.
Match special slots to the route
Special slots change item behavior, so count them separately from normal open space:
- A shielded slot protects the wearer from radiation emitted by the item in that slot. Use it when the return cargo creates radiation pressure.
- A refrigerated slot slows decay for raw meat, vegetables, and cold foods, but makes hot food decay faster.
- A freezer slot stops decay on fresh items. It is a strong reason to take Cold Storage Pack when the route exists to preserve perishables.
- A warming slot slows decay for hot food and speeds decay for items that should remain cold. Do not treat it as a generic preservation slot.
Write the intended cargo beside each special slot before departure. An empty freezer or shielded slot has no route value, while the same backpack may still be worthwhile for its ordinary capacity and reduction.
Progression checkpoints
Early routes: reliability matters more than an ideal endgame choice. Use an available bag and protect enough space for survival equipment.
Industrial and laboratory routes: mixed materials create slot pressure. Standardize a loadout and leave optional tools behind when the route does not need them.
Specialized farming: special slots can be more valuable than a small raw capacity difference. Match the bag to the repeated target rather than treating one backpack as permanent.
Long portal runs: plan the return before filling the last slot. Inventory capacity is useful only if the player can safely carry the result out.
Common selection failures
- Every new backpack is treated as a strict upgrade. Compare weight and special utility, not only the order in which items appear.
- The outbound kit fills the new space. Separate mandatory equipment from comfort items and duplicate tools.
- The route is weight-limited, not slot-limited. Return with the actual bottleneck recorded and choose again.
- A co-op group duplicates every tool. Assign shared tools where recovery risk is acceptable, while each player retains essential survival items.
When the comparison is complete
The decision is finished when you can name the route, its limiting constraint, the obtainable backpack that addresses it, and the point at which you will return. For the next layer of planning, use the storage classification system to make unloading predictable and the base relocation guide when travel distance, not personal inventory, is the real problem.
Run a controlled before-and-after comparison
Use the same route once with the current backpack and once with the candidate. Keep the mandatory loadout unchanged. Record whether the return was caused by full slots, carry weight, depleted supplies, or route danger. Only the first two measure the backpack directly; the others point to a different problem.
Do not fill new space just because it exists. Reserve the additional capacity for the material or special item that justified the change. If the route still ends at the same checkpoint for the same reason, the backpack has not solved the bottleneck even if its source statistics are better.
In co-op, compare total group capacity and recovery risk. Concentrating every critical item on the largest backpack may look efficient until that player is separated or downed. Split progression items and survival tools deliberately, then assign bulk material to the pack best suited to carry it. The result is a team loadout, not four independent "best backpack" choices.

A route that does not fit one row is probably two trips disguised as one. Split the objective before choosing the bag.
Acquisition caveat for Rat Pack
Rat Pack is not a normal generic enemy drop. The current source notes a specific condition: kill a trapped Lab Rat or Sapper with blunt damage while it is held by a Net Launcher. Damage effects can kill the target before the blunt finishing condition is satisfied. If the group wants this pack, plan the capture and final hit rather than assuming repeated ordinary kills will produce it.
That acquisition effort should be part of the comparison. A readily available Military Pack can be the better route choice today even when a later specialist pack has more capacity. Compare what the save can obtain now, then repeat the decision when the intended backpack is actually reachable.
