Choose utility before raw capacity
Backpack progression is not a single line from fewer slots to more slots. Some packs use part of their value to protect a specific item type or change movement. A scientist returning with radioactive material needs a shielded slot. A food run may benefit from refrigeration, a freezer, or warming storage depending on the cargo. A route built around vertical movement may value jump or flight utility even when another pack has more total slots.
Start with the item or obstacle that would make the route fail. Then choose a pack that covers that requirement and still leaves enough ordinary capacity for weapons, recovery supplies, and loot. The Backpack Route Planner performs the slot subtraction and checks one selected utility. This page explains what each utility means in a route plan and what it does not prove.
Do not assume a special slot protects every item in the backpack. The source lists counts. One shielded slot covers the item placed in that slot, not all radioactive cargo. Likewise, refrigerated, freezer, and warming slots are separate capabilities.

The Research Pack has 30 total slots, 22% weight reduction, one shielded slot, and one refrigerated slot. The Field Sample Pack also has 30 total slots and 22% reduction, with two shielded slots and one warming slot. The Cold Storage Pack has 30 total slots and 22% reduction, with two refrigerated slots and one freezer slot. These similar totals make the intended cargo more important than the capacity number.
Build a special-cargo plan
- Name the exact item category that needs protection or the movement obstacle the route must cross.
- Count how many protected items or stacks must be carried at the same time.
- Select a pack with enough of the matching special slot. Do not count ordinary slots as protected.
- Reserve normal slots for access items, combat, healing, food, water, repair, and a return requirement.
- Use the backpack planner to calculate the remaining loot margin.
- Place the protected item in the intended special slot and confirm the live inventory indicates the expected handling.
- Set a stop condition for when the protected count or ordinary slot margin is exhausted.
- Return directly if a new item creates a requirement the chosen pack cannot cover.
This procedure prevents a common planning error: choosing a specialized pack but filling its protected slots with low-priority items before the objective cargo is found. Reserve the named slot just as deliberately as a key or weapon slot.
Compare the pack around the special slot
A special capability is only one part of the loadout. Compare total capacity, the backpack's own item weight, weight reduction, progression availability, and unmodeled effects. A pack can cover the objective cargo yet leave too little ordinary margin for a safe return. Another can offer ample capacity but no protection for the item that defines the route.

The planner intentionally omits Dunkeltaler Backpack and Giant's Pack while the available Backpack and Armor and Gear summaries disagree on their item weights. It also omits Glitch Pack because the Backpack row describes a variety of special slots without giving the counts needed by the deterministic model. Omission is safer than presenting a guessed comparison. Players can still use the source and in-game item card for those packs.
Use temperature storage carefully
Food and Cooking describes a large system of ingredients, prepared items, and storage concerns. A refrigerated slot and a freezer slot should be selected from the cargo requirement, not from a claim that one always preserves food for a fixed duration. This guide does not publish decay multipliers or hours because those details can vary by item and patch and are not needed for the slot decision.
For a collection route, reserve the temperature slot before leaving and move the target item into it immediately. For base logistics, unload into appropriate storage on return rather than using the backpack as permanent food storage. A warming slot has a different job: it supports hot prepared food. Confirm the actual food and effect before giving that slot priority over refrigeration.
If the route produces mixed food categories, protect the item with the highest consequence for losing its intended state and shorten the route for the rest. Do not assume one special slot changes every stack in ordinary inventory.
Use shielded slots as a countable limit
The Backpack article states that a shielded slot protects the wearer from radiation emitted by the item inside that slot. This is a clear capability but also a strict count. A Research Pack can shield one item slot, and a Field Sample Pack can shield two. If the route can produce more radioactive stacks, set the return trigger at the protected count or prepare another documented protection method.
Radiation protection from worn equipment, consumable effects, distance, and storage are separate systems. A shielded backpack slot solves the emission from its contained item; it does not prove immunity to an irradiated environment. During co-op collection, assign protected slots before pickup. If one player owns the shielded pack, other players should not collect extra radioactive cargo without a handoff plan. Count protected stacks, not people.
Mobility packs need a fallback
Long Jump Pack and Jetpack change movement rather than item storage. Their value depends on a route obstacle and a safe failure response. A jump or flight route should still identify a walkable retreat, a landing area, and what happens if the equipment is unavailable or depleted. Do not place an irreplaceable return plan entirely on one mobility effect.
Mobility packs also compete with specialized storage. A player cannot equip a Cold Storage Pack and a Jetpack in the same backpack slot. In co-op, split roles when the route needs both: one player handles movement access and another protects cargo. In solo play, complete the movement objective first, establish a safe transfer point, and change equipment only where recovery is controlled.
The Backpack Route Planner marks mobility coverage when the candidate provides jump boost or flight. That result means the capability exists, not that the route is automatically clear.
When the special-slot plan fails
- The item is in an ordinary slot. Move it into the named special slot and verify the inventory state. Owning the pack is not enough.
- Protected cargo exceeds the slot count. Stop collecting, hand off to a second protected carrier, or return. Do not treat the extra stack as covered.
- A larger pack removes the required utility. Compare the objective before capacity. More ordinary slots may be a downgrade for this route.
- Temperature cargo changes category. Recheck whether it needs refrigeration, freezing, or warming. Do not substitute based on the icon color alone.
- Mobility fails at the obstacle. Return to the safe landing or staging point and use the fallback route. Do not keep testing with critical cargo exposed.
- Source rows conflict. Use the current in-game item card and postpone a numeric comparison until the public sources agree.
Final pack check
A complete special-slot plan names the protected item, required slot type, simultaneous slot count, ordinary inventory margin, and return trigger. A mobility plan names the obstacle, landing point, and fallback. If the plan only names a backpack, it is not yet tied to a route outcome.
