Soup buff comparison: verified effects, timing, and tradeoffs
Compare selected Abiotic Factor soup buffs by task, duration, benefit, and drawback without relying on a universal tier list.
This page is a soup-effect lookup, not a ranking of every food in Abiotic Factor. Use it when you already know the next task and need to choose a soup whose documented effect matches that task. For complete ingredient lists, use the soup recipe reference. For plans that combine baked food, cooked food, and soup, use the food loadout guide.
The distinction matters. A soup with a strong effect can still be the wrong choice if its timer expires before the relevant room, if its side effect works against the route, or if the group only needed ordinary hunger and thirst support.
Choose by the next task
The diagram is a planning aid, not an in-game map. Effect names and values below come from the linked official buff pages for version 1.4.
Verified soup-effect table
| Player task | Soup | Documented effect | Duration | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carry a heavy return load | Hearty Stew | Bodacious raises maximum carry weight by 25% | 10 minutes | It helps carrying capacity; it does not create inventory slots |
| Move faster while carrying | A&L Mega-Stew | Mega-Ante adds 10% movement speed and 2 Strength levels | 10 minutes | The temporary Strength does not unlock skill perks; its stated carry contribution is 4 |
| Reduce incoming radiation | Radfish Chowder | Rad Resistant halves radiation absorption | 15 minutes | It reduces incoming radiation; it does not remove radiation already absorbed |
| Train Crafting or Construction | Balanced Stew | Big Brain adds 10% Crafting and Construction XP gain | 10 minutes | Start the work before the timer is mostly spent |
| Train Blunt or Sharp Melee | Meaty Stew | Heightened Senses adds 10% Blunt and Sharp Melee XP gain | 15 minutes | It increases XP gain, not weapon damage |
| Train Accuracy or Reloading | Sustenance Soup | Quick Reflexes adds 10% Accuracy and Reloading XP gain | 15 minutes | Bring enough ammunition or a valid training target before eating |
| Train Sprinting or Sneaking | Bland Pea Soup | Lightfooted adds 10% Sprinting and Sneaking XP gain | 15 minutes | It does not directly increase sprint speed |
| Train Agriculture | Veggie Stew | Living Off the Land adds 10% Agriculture XP gain | 15 minutes | Stage the planting and harvesting work first |
| Improve vending-food value | Sweet Porridge | Sweet Tooth adds 25% hunger and thirst from snacks and soda, and 50% from sweets | 15 minutes | It only pays off if the matching consumables are available |
| Reduce damage while accepting extra Leyak pressure | Greyeb Chowder | Desire of the Flesh reduces incoming damage by 15% | 13 minutes | The same status makes the Leyak appear more frequently, documented as once every 2 real-time minutes |
| Slow ordinary food and water drain | Many effective soups | Souper Satisfied slows hunger and thirst drain by 20% | 10 minutes | Check the official source list because not every soup uses the same status |
These entries are comparable because each row states the exact job it solves. They are not interchangeable. For example, Big Brain is useful only when the player actually crafts or builds during its window, while Rad Resistant answers an environmental hazard rather than an XP goal.
Three practical selection patterns
A resource return trip
Choose between Hearty Stew and A&L Mega-Stew by identifying the real blocker. If the character becomes overburdened before leaving the area, the documented 25% maximum carry increase from Bodacious directly addresses the problem. If weight is already manageable but travel speed matters, Mega-Ante is the closer match. Neither choice justifies calling one soup universally better.
Prepare the soup before entering the final collection loop, but eat it close to the return leg. A ten-minute effect consumed at base can be mostly gone by the time the inventory is full. When the status ends, stop collecting and return or drop low-priority items rather than assuming the increased limit is permanent.
A radiation route
Radfish Chowder is relevant when the route applies incoming radiation. Its official status page says Rad Resistant cuts absorption by half for fifteen minutes. That is different from removing accumulated radiation. Carry the separate treatment your route requires and check the radiation meter instead of treating the soup as complete protection.
Eat at the last safe checkpoint before exposure. If the Rad Resistant icon is missing, do not enter merely because the correct soup was packed. Confirm that the intended serving was consumed and that the timer is active.
A skill-training session
Big Brain, Heightened Senses, Quick Reflexes, Lightfooted, and Living Off the Land each affect a different skill group. The efficient sequence is the same:
- Gather the materials, targets, ammunition, or crops needed for the session.
- Move to the place where the repeated action will happen.
- Eat the matching soup and confirm its named status.
- Perform only actions covered by that status during the timer.
- Stop when the status ends instead of assuming the XP bonus continues.
This workflow is more useful than an overall tier list because it prevents a correct buff from being consumed while the player is still organizing storage or traveling.
Soup handling facts that affect the decision
The current Cooking reference documents several rules that change how a soup plan works:
- Soup becomes available at Cooking level 3.
- A filled Cooking Pot must be placed on a powered stove before ingredients are added.
- A Soup Bowl is required to take soup from a completed pot.
- Most valid soups provide four portions, increasing to six at Cooking level 17. A Soup Bowl holds two servings.
- Completed soup does not burn if left on the stove, and soup in a pot or bowl does not spoil.
- A recipe mismatch can produce Bad Soup, so confirm the name before waiting for the pot to finish.
Those rules make a shared soup station practical, but they do not remove the need to check the effect. A pot can be safe to store while its benefit is still wrong for the next objective.
In that serving rule, four portions from a standard pot mean four full bowl collections, with two edible servings in each bowl: eight consumptions in total, or twelve at Cooking 17. The individual food page's hunger and thirst values are per edible serving. Do not multiply a per-serving value by four and call it the total food supplied by the pot.
Side effects and stop conditions
Greyeb Chowder is the clearest example of why this page avoids simple rankings. Its damage reduction is documented, but so is the increased Leyak frequency. Do not use it when the group lacks a Leyak response or when the next task needs quiet inventory management rather than combat durability.
Sweet Porridge is another conditional choice. Sweet Tooth changes the value of specific snack, soda, and sweet categories. If none of those items are in the route kit, the status provides no reason to consume scarce ingredients.
For XP soups, the stop condition is the end of the documented timer. For Radfish Chowder, it is the end of Rad Resistant or the point where the radiation meter is no longer controlled. For a carrying soup, it is the moment the inventory would become overburdened without the temporary effect.
Recovery when the plan goes wrong
| Failure | What happened | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| The pot remains Unknown Soup | The ingredient set does not currently match a known recipe | Remove what can still be removed, or accept the result and verify the Compendium before the next batch |
| The useful timer is nearly gone on arrival | The soup was eaten too early | Return to a safe point, use another serving only if the route still justifies it, and move the activation checkpoint next time |
| A training buff is active but XP work cannot start | Required materials, crops, targets, or ammunition were not staged | Save remaining servings and prepare the session before consuming again |
| The character is still accumulating too much radiation | Rad Resistant reduces absorption but does not make the route harmless | Leave exposure, use the appropriate treatment, and improve equipment or route timing |
| Greyeb Chowder creates unwanted Leyak pressure | Its drawback was ignored | Move to a prepared Leyak response area and choose a different defensive plan next time |
| A teammate expected the same result from another food | The plan used a broad category instead of the named buff | Compare the active status name and the official source item before repeating the meal |
Pre-departure checklist
- Name the next task in one sentence.
- Pick one soup whose official effect directly supports that task.
- Verify the current recipe in the Compendium or recipe reference.
- Stage every material or target needed during short XP windows.
- Carry a normal recovery option for hazards the soup does not remove.
- Eat at the last safe checkpoint and confirm the named status icon.
- Leave or change plans when the effect ends or its drawback becomes costly.
This approach keeps the comparison stable even when the game adds recipes. New soups can be evaluated by the same four questions: what named effect does it apply, how long does it last, what exact task benefits, and what cost or drawback can invalidate the choice?
