Canaan first-clear route: access, preparation, objectives, and extraction
A conservative first-visit plan for Canaan that separates the confirmed access chain from combat preparation, route decisions, and a recoverable exit.
Original exploration route
Plan a recoverable first clear without unsupported shortcuts. Source basis: the references listed on this page, checked for game version 1.4. This original planning diagram is not to scale and is not copied game or wiki media.
What this route covers
This page is for the first deliberate Canaan visit. It covers the confirmed portal access chain, preparation, a conservative objective order, and the point at which to leave. It is not a coordinate map and does not claim an exact clear time. Canaan is large enough that a first visit should prioritize orientation and a successful extraction over collecting every item.
Confirm access before packing
The portal is in the Particle Labs area of Cascade Laboratories, beside the Snag Vine growth. Two broken Flow Control Modules take different items: one Night Essence and one Snag Vine Seed. After both repairs, activate the nearby keypad with a Keypad Hacker (Tier 3).
| Access check | Evidence to confirm | Do not proceed when |
|---|---|---|
| Particle Labs reached | The portal and two Flow Control Modules are visible near Snag Vine | The route to Particle Labs is still blocked |
| Night Essence carried | One module accepts the Night Realm resource | The item was confused with Leyak Essence |
| Snag Vine Seed carried | The other module accepts the seed | Only a whole Snag Vine is available; salvage it at a Repair and Salvage Station first |
| Hacker requirement met | Keypad Hacker (Tier 3) can use the activation keypad | The character has only a lower-tier device |
| Return plan exists | The group knows how it will extract | The only plan is to explore until supplies run out |
Snag Vine Seed is obtainable by salvaging a Snag Vine at a Repair and Salvage Station. Night Essence is a separate resource used by the other module. Keeping the two names in the checklist prevents the common mistake of arriving with two portal-related items that do not match the sockets.
First-clear preparation
- Carry a ranged answer, a way to handle bleeding, and enough repair capacity for the planned objective, not an unlimited sweep.
- Reserve inventory space for the Lodestone and the resulting fragment rather than filling every slot in the village.
- Bring dependable lighting and a navigation habit: identify a landmark, complete one branch, then return to that landmark.
- Set a retreat trigger before entry, such as loss of the primary weapon, inability to identify the return route, or insufficient healing for another encounter.
- In co-op, designate the player carrying progression-critical items and keep that player out of unnecessary fights.
- Confirm access to a Repair and Salvage Station. The Canaan route uses one to break the Lodestone into the fragment required by the exit equipment.
Route priorities inside Canaan
The story route is a chain of named outcomes rather than a full map sweep:
- Move from the entrance toward the village and identify the bell towers before starting a long fight.
- Work through the village toward the swamp and the wooden-walkway route to the Witch's Hut.
- Speak with Dr. Lenora Riggs and take the Lodestone from the hut.
- Use a Repair and Salvage Station to dismantle the Lodestone into a Lodestone Fragment. The wiki notes that a station exists in Canaan, though bringing a known station is a conservative option if the group does not know its route.
- Return toward the church on the hill near the village blacksmith.
- Defeat Niketas, then use the door behind the podium to reach the roof.
- Insert the Lodestone Fragment into the portal equipment and use the exit.
Do not dismantle the Lodestone before the team has confirmed why it is being carried. The fragment is the route item; the intact Lodestone also has other uses, so converting it should be a deliberate first-clear objective rather than an automatic rule for every later visit.
Control bell-tower escalation
Canaan villagers can run to a nearby Bell Tower and sound an alarm. Additional villagers then emerge from the blackened doorways of huts. That turns a small path-clearing fight into a larger encounter without advancing the objective.
| Enemy behavior | Readable risk | Response goal |
|---|---|---|
| Villager breaks toward a bell | Reinforcements may enter from village huts | Interrupt the runner or disengage before the new group surrounds the route |
| Woodsman closes distance | Heavy axe attacks can cause severe bleeding | Preserve space and keep bleeding treatment reachable |
| Farmer begins a charge | The pitchfork can catch and push the player | Move off the charge line instead of backing through the team |
| Group blocks the village path | Fighting every target may drain the extraction kit | Clear only the route needed for the swamp, church, or exit objective |
The source identifies Guard, Torchbearer, Farmer, Woodsman, Niketas, Lodeite, and Bogman as current Canaan enemies. Do not prepare for a single uniform melee mob. The alarm system and mixed attack types are the reason to keep a retreat line to the last landmark.
Failure recovery
- The portal opened but the route is unfamiliar. Use the first trip for landmarks and leave with a small success.
- Inventory fills with generic loot. Drop low-priority material before it displaces the item that justified the trip.
- The group separates. Return to the last named landmark rather than moving deeper to search independently.
- The access recipe differs from an old guide. Follow the current in-game recipe and linked source; do not force an outdated component list.
- A bell was rung. Stop looting, identify the blackened hut doorways, and decide whether the objective is still reachable without fighting the entire reinforcement group.
- The Lodestone was found but cannot become a route item. Return to the Repair and Salvage Station step; the exit equipment needs the fragment, not an intact Lodestone.
Completion condition and next visit
A successful first clear ends with the selected objective completed, the return path understood, and critical items extracted. Record which branch remains and convert it into a focused farming run later. Compare repeat-value decisions in the portal resource comparison, and use the Cascade Labs walkthrough when the problem is reaching the portal rather than navigating Canaan.
Convert the first clear into repeatable runs
After returning, separate the route into access, combat, collection, and exit. Write one confirmed landmark for each transition. If a transition cannot be described without "somewhere past the village," the route is not ready to be treated as a farming loop. Revisit for orientation before optimizing speed.
Compare every collected Canaan material with an actual crafting or progression need. Keep a small reserve of unique resources, but do not fill storage simply because an item is portal-specific. The repeat route should name one primary target and a short list of secondary pickups that lie on the same confirmed path.
When the world resets, verify the access and landmark sequence before committing the full farming loadout. A changed spawn or blocked path should shorten that run, not encourage an improvised detour with all valuable equipment aboard. In co-op, the route caller should announce the extraction trigger and the player holding critical material should leave first if the group separates.
This post-run record is the original value added here: the source identifies what exists in Canaan, while the record turns one successful clear into a specific, recoverable future objective.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | What goes wrong | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Entering before confirming the two Flow Control Module inputs | Night Essence and Snag Vine Seed are confused with other portal resources. | Match one exact item to each module and carry the Tier 3 hacker. |
| Ignoring a villager running to a bell | Reinforcements spawn from blackened village doorways. | Interrupt the runner or retreat to the last controlled landmark. |
| Filling inventory with generic Canaan drops | Unique materials get displaced by common items. The primary objective is lost. | Reserve slots for named target materials. Drop common resources when slots run low. |
| Skipping the return landmark | Deep exploration without a breadcrumb trail. The exit becomes a guess. | Identify one landmark per branch. Return to it before pushing further. |
| Splitting past the first fork in co-op | Separated players cannot share healing or revive. One death can strand the loot. | Stay within voice range. Designate a rally point at each named landmark. |
| Rushing to clear every branch on the first visit | Supplies run out before the swamp, church, and roof sequence is complete. | Finish the Lodestone exit chain before optional exploration. |
