Player Note: Dr. Kael: Cascade Labs was the sector that broke my streak of confident navigation. I went in after Manufacturing West thinking I understood vertical layouts. The elevator system here is different because not all elevators connect to all floors, and the ones that do aren't labeled in any obvious way. My first visit produced 12 pages of notes and a lot of wrong turns. The walkthrough below is the edited version of those notes.

Community: The Cryo-Lab access route is consistently described as the most confusing part of Cascade Labs in Steam Discussions: most players report accessing it on their second or third visit after missing the correct elevator on their first, based on Steam Discussions.

Practical Cascade Laboratories Route

Prerequisites and Preparation

Before you can access Cascade Laboratories, you need to complete the Manufacturing West sector first. The route requires navigating through the Synchrotron area: take both elevators down to ground level, then enter the hole leading to Cascade Laboratories.

Essential equipment to bring:

  • GATE Security Cart: needed to transport materials between sectors efficiently. Park it near the elevator entry point.
  • Hazmat Suit: unlike earlier sectors where radiation is localized, Cascade Laboratories has ambient radiation throughout. Entering without a Hazmat Suit at full durability risks rapid health deterioration.
  • X-Ray Lamp: several areas contain environmental hazards and enemies that require this tool to navigate safely.
  • Weapons for Order soldiers: you will encounter multiple Order soldiers in this area.
BringUse it forLeave without it if...
Hazmat SuitLonger radiation exposure and mistakes during navigationYou are only checking the entrance and will not push deeper
X-Ray LampReading danger before committing to a roomYou already know the exact return route and are not scouting
Security CartHauling materials back through the elevator chainThe trip is only for a door, switch, or shortcut
Spare healingSurviving a bad Order contactThe route has a stocked forward fallback

Important note: Do not delay Cascade Laboratories while looking for unconfirmed access items. The practical access path is progression through Manufacturing West and the Security Sector connections described below.

Entry Level: Establishing a Foothold

From the Manufacturing West connection point, proceed to the C. Blocks area. Park your Security Cart just outside the elevator and go up one floor. This level contains the Adjustment Wing on one side and IS-1057 on the other.

IS-1057 Room Access

Enter the room marked IS-1057, identifiable by yellow paint markings. Drop down into the room and push a button to unlock one of the two doors leading to the Inner Wing. This action is required before progressing further.

Forklift Atrium Keypad

In the atrium containing a wrecked forklift, locate a Keypad door. Open it to unlock a shortcut that connects back to the elevator area. This reduces travel time when returning from deeper sections.

Initial Loot Priorities

Before descending, collect the following items from the entry level:

  • Barrel (for crafting)
  • 6 Refined Carbon
  • At least 1 Exor Heart: store in a powered Refrigerator to prevent decay

Return to the elevator, descend one level, and drive your GATE Security Cart back to base to offload these materials.

Level 2: Adjustment Wing and Security Progression

Dr. Manse Hologram Activation

From the elevator, proceed down the corridor to find a locked door. Unlock it, then pass through the locker room. Turn right, then left to reach a series of labs. Activate the Dr. Manse hologram on the right side. This hologram provides context for the area but is not required for progression.

Order Soldier Encounters

Several Order soldiers patrol this level. Approach with caution, using cover and ranged weapons when possible. The soldiers are concentrated near the elevator and the labs area. Keep your eyes open as there are several Order soldiers in this area.

Security Sector Connection

From the hologram location, move toward the elevator. This elevator connects to the Security Sector, providing an alternate route back to the Sister of the Unlost and other safe areas. Unlocking this elevator creates a valuable shortcut for future visits.

Workflow: Accessing the Security Sector Connection

  1. Unlock Door 03 in Storage Area C: Return to the Security Sector and navigate to the second floor of Storage Area C. Use the Keypad to open Door 03. Descend the stairs and proceed through the outer tunnel, passing through Door 03. This reveals an elevator on the right side.

  2. Activate the Second Dr. Manse Hologram: Head past the Security Keypad and turn left to find another Dr. Manse hologram. Activate it, then turn right and descend the elevator to unlock it. This elevator deposits you near the door next to the Sister of the Unlost.

  3. Open Security Door 01: From the elevator, turn left, then right. Security Door 01 is now open. Proceed with caution: this area contains increased enemy presence. Use the X-Ray Lamp to detect hidden threats. From this point forward, things will get dangerous.

  4. Open the Laboratories Door: Locate and open the door marked "Laboratories." This creates a path back to the Sister of the Unlost and ultimately to Cascade Laboratories. Return to the lobby, walk to the Repair Bay, and turn around to find another locked door on the right that can now be opened.

Recovery Advice for Common Failures

Failure PointSymptomsRecovery Action
Insufficient Hazmat durabilityRapid health loss from radiationRetreat to base immediately. Carry a spare Hazmat Suit or repair kit for extended expeditions.
Overwhelmed by Order soldiersRepeated deaths in Level 2Clear the area methodically, using the elevator as a safe retreat point. Soldiers do not respawn immediately, allowing for gradual area clearance.
Lost in vertical navigationUnable to locate specific floorsThe elevator is the central navigation hub. Memorize which floor corresponds to which area. There is no in-game map, so note floor numbers externally if needed.
Missing Exor Heart storageExor Heart decays before useStore Exor Hearts in a powered Refrigerator immediately after collection. Do not carry them on extended expeditions.

Route Choice Comparison

Direct Route (Recommended): Complete Manufacturing West first, then proceed through the Synchrotron to Cascade Laboratories. This is the intended progression path and provides the necessary equipment and context.

Alternate Route: Access Cascade Laboratories through the Security Sector connection after unlocking Door 03 and the Laboratories door. This route is useful for return trips but requires more backtracking initially.

Stop Conditions: If your Hazmat Suit durability drops below 50%, or if you have more than 3 Exor Hearts without refrigeration, return to base immediately. Do not push deeper into the complex without proper preparation.

Final notes

The sources confirm that Cascade Laboratories is one of the most dangerous Portal Worlds available. The top level and roof are the only accessible areas for the player. By the time you visit, the Order has already infiltrated the facility. Dead GATE employees are scattered throughout, indicating the area's high danger level.

The Containment area is the final progression point within Cascade Laboratories. Completing this section unlocks access to subsequent sectors and endgame content. Always maintain situational awareness and retreat when necessary: survival is more important than speed.

Return-trip priorities after the first clear

Once the first Labs route is open, the sector becomes much easier if each return has one declared purpose.

Return objectiveStart fromMain stop conditionBest companion page
Reopen safe labs routesEntry elevator and Adjustment WingCore shortcut opened and path memorizedOffice Sector map
Push Security crossoverDoor 03 and Laboratories connectionOffice and Labs shortcut is active both waysSecurity Sector walkthrough
Unlock Rise for healingAdjustment Wing puzzle routePortal is open and inventory still has roomRise portal world walkthrough
Stage ContainmentLevel 2 safe room is stockedBed, healing, and light are placed forwardBio-Acoustic Key guide

This is the cleanest way to keep Cascade Labs from turning into an all-purpose dump run. Each return should either open a durable shortcut or solve a single later blocker.

First-clear note sheet

Cascade Labs is easier when you write down route facts as you discover them instead of trying to memorize every elevator after the session.

Note to recordGood formatWhy it helps
Elevator behaviorEntry elevator: floor and nearby landmarkPrevents repeated wrong-floor loops
Shortcut openedDoor name plus the side it returns toConfirms whether the unlock is useful both ways
Hazard zoneRoom or corridor plus required protectionStops blind re-entry with damaged gear
Loot left behindItem type plus nearest anchorMakes the next haul a focused return trip

Keep this note sheet short. It should help the next run start cleanly, not turn into a second map you never read.

Follow-up routes worth splitting into dedicated runs

Several of the most searched Cascade Labs questions are better handled as separate trips with separate inventories.

  • Need the optional healing route, not more lab looting: open the Rise portal world walkthrough.
  • Need the checkpoint-and-portal logic after Labs: use the Security Sector walkthrough.
  • Need a focused Containment prep run with a forward respawn plan: read the Containment Block guide.
  • Need late-game heat and tram planning after Lab progression: move to the Reactors walkthrough.
