Crafting Bench upgrade tree: tiers, requirements, and build order
A source-checked Crafting Bench upgrade path for Abiotic Factor, including tier requirements, materials, practical uses, and a safe order for installing each upgrade.
The Crafting Bench has three upgrade tiers. The tiers are tied to the Crafting skill, but the upgrades within a tier solve different problems. A player who needs reliable healing should not follow the same first-upgrade plan as a group that is losing time moving materials during long crafting sessions.
This page covers the upgrade tree attached to the Crafting Bench. It does not claim to list every specialist station or every recipe in the game. Use it to decide what to install next, confirm the materials before leaving base, and avoid planning around upgrade names that are not part of the current game.

The diagram is not a map and is not drawn to scale. Names, tier requirements, and effects come from the current Crafting Bench reference.
Before buying an upgrade
A powered Crafting Bench provides its standard crafting functions and prevents normal enemy respawns inside its safe area. It can still become a target during Assault Events, so an upgrade does not replace walls, controlled entrances, or a repair plan. Keep a battery connected if the normal grid is vulnerable to a night-time outage.
Use this check before spending materials:
- Confirm the bench is powered and placed where the safe area covers the base.
- Open the upgrade menu and confirm that your Crafting level exposes the tier.
- Choose the problem you need to solve now: recovery, storage access, warmth, durability, Portal Storms, passive scrap, or slower survival-need drain.
- Put the exact materials beside the bench before installing anything.
- After installation, test the effect before reorganizing the whole base.
Tier 1 at Crafting level 2
Tier 1 contains three independent upgrades. None of them is an automatic prerequisite for another Tier 1 choice.
| Upgrade | Required materials | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Dioxohealer | 1 Medkit, 10 Bio Scrap, 5 Anteverse Wheat | Heals nearby players; nearby farmable plants strengthen the effect |
| Item Transporter | 2 Raw Exor Heart, 1 Energy Brick | Lets crafting, repair, and salvage pull from nearby compatible storage |
| Bench Warmer | 1 Heater, 4 Box of Screws | Raises the local ambient temperature by one level and can be toggled |
Choose Dioxohealer when repeated recovery trips are interrupting work at the base. The official reference records a base healing rate of 3 health per second and an increase of 0.5 per nearby farmable plant, up to six plants. The effect does not stack across multiple benches, so building several healing benches in one room is not an efficient use of materials.
Choose Item Transporter when crafting is slowed by moving components between containers. Its documented range is 16 meters, and it can read storage in deployable objects such as crates, fridges, toolboxes, and medkits. It also links nearby Repair and Salvage Stations. Test boundary containers after moving the bench because the transport radius is smaller than the full safe area.
Choose Bench Warmer for a base where cold conditions interrupt sleep or work. It provides the same one-level ambient temperature increase described for a Heater. This is the only Crafting Bench upgrade that the player can manually toggle, using the heating coils on top of the bench.
Tier 2 at Crafting level 5
Tier 2 shifts from daily convenience to base protection.
| Upgrade | Required materials | Best reason to install it |
|---|---|---|
| Reinforced Bench | 20 Metal Scrap, 4 Refined Carbon, 2 Reinforced Wooden Plank | The bench is taking damage during attacks |
| Portal Suppression Field | 4 Raw Exor Heart, 2 Anteverse Gem, 8 Military Electronics | Portal Storms are occurring close to the base |
Reinforced Bench reduces damage received by the bench by 30 percent. It does not make the surrounding walls or storage tougher, so keep vulnerable containers away from exposed approaches.
Portal Suppression Field prevents Portal Storm enemies from spawning around a powered bench. Portals may appear briefly, but they close without releasing enemies. The field does not stop other Assault Events, including Order Assaults and Exor Patrols. During Rolling Blackouts it can destroy Power Leeches within range while the bench has power. Plan backup electricity around that condition.
Tier 3 at Crafting level 15
Tier 3 adds long-term resource and survival support.
| Upgrade | Required materials | Output or effect |
|---|---|---|
| Spontaneous Matter Synthesizer | 1 Storage Crate (Large), 2 Neutrino Mapper, 1 Raw Exor Heart, 1 Reinforced CPU | Periodically places a random useful item in the container under the bench |
| Metabolic Temporal Field | 1 Reinforced CPU, 1 Distribution Pad, 2 Raw Exor Heart, 4 Hydro Pipe | Slows hunger, thirst, and stamina drain for nearby players |
The Synthesizer is passive support, not a targeted farming method. Its current documented output pool includes common scrap and occasional components such as a Stapler, Military Electronics, a Capacitor, or Hydro Pipe. Check the small container under the left side of the upgraded bench rather than expecting the items to enter nearby storage automatically.
The Metabolic Temporal Field is useful where players spend long periods crafting, sorting, or preparing a route. The official reference notes that the in-game description mentions continence, while the observed effect lowers stamina drain instead. Treat the documented behavior as version-sensitive and recheck it after major patches.
Upgrade order by base problem
There is no universal order after the skill gates are met. Use the first row that describes the problem in the current base.
| Current problem | First choice | Follow-up check |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting requires constant crate trips | Item Transporter | Move edge containers until the bench detects them |
| The group returns from routes injured | Dioxohealer | Keep up to six farmable plants near the bench |
| Cold affects the work or sleeping area | Bench Warmer | Confirm one temperature level is enough |
| The bench is repeatedly damaged | Reinforced Bench | Repair the surrounding defensive layout too |
| Portal Storms disrupt the base | Portal Suppression Field | Keep the bench powered through outages |
| Common scrap runs consume too much time | Spontaneous Matter Synthesizer | Continue targeted routes for specific rare items |
| Long preparation drains food and stamina | Metabolic Temporal Field | Confirm players are standing inside its radius |
Failure checks
| Symptom | Check | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting or an upgrade effect stops | Bench power | Restore grid power or connect a charged battery |
| Item Transporter misses one crate | Distance and object type | Move the container closer and reopen the crafting menu |
| Dioxohealer feels weaker than expected | Nearby farmable plants | Place active Garden Plots near the bench, up to the documented cap |
| Portal enemies still appear | Event type and power | Confirm it is a Portal Storm and that the bench remains powered |
| Bench still takes damage | Meaning of Reinforced Bench | The upgrade reduces damage; it does not create immunity |
| Synthesizer appears empty | Output container location and elapsed time | Check the box under the left side later; do not treat it as instant production |
The completion condition is practical: the selected upgrade is installed, the bench remains powered, and its effect solves the problem that justified the cost. Do not spend materials on a later tier only because it is available.
