The Problem
You crafted an Energy Pistol expecting it to carry you through combat. Against basic pests it works fine. Against anything with real health, it feels like a peashooter. Meanwhile everyone on Reddit says it is the best weapon in the game. What are they doing that you are not?
The Solution
The Energy Pistol is not a damage monster. It is a workhorse. Cheap ammo, fast fire rate, decent range, works against almost every enemy type. The secret is upgrading it to Mk II early and using it as your daily-driver exploration weapon — not your boss killer.
Base Stats (Mk I)
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Base Damage | 14 per shot |
| Fire Rate | 3.0 shots per second |
| DPS (theoretical) | 42 |
| Magazine Size | 15 energy cells |
| Reload Time | 1.5 seconds |
| Effective Range | 20 meters |
| Damage Type | Energy |
| Durability | 300 uses before repair needed |
The 14 base damage looks low on paper. But at 3 shots per second with a 20-meter range, you are putting out consistent damage from a safe distance. That consistency is the entire point.
How to Craft the Energy Pistol
| Material | Quantity | Where to Find |
|---|---|---|
| Coil | 3 | Dismantle electronics, loot from Office Sector shelves |
| Tech Scrap | 4 | Server racks, computer towers, Lab Sector desks |
| Metal Scrap | 2 | Everywhere — crates, shelves, floor loot |
| Circuit Board | 1 | Printers, computer towers, Manufacturing West |
Required Bench: Basic Weapons Bench (Crafting Level 2)
This is one of the cheapest ranged weapons in the game. You can have one within the first hour if you loot Office Sector methodically. Prioritize Coils — they are the bottleneck material.
Crafting Energy Cells (Ammo)
| Material | Quantity | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Tech Scrap | 2 | 10 Energy Cells |
| Coil | 1 | (included in above) |
One crafting batch produces 10 cells. That is two-thirds of a base magazine or half of an Mk II magazine. For a full exploration run, craft 5 batches (50 cells) minimum.
Ammo Cost Comparison
| Weapon | Ammo Craft Cost | Shots per Batch | Cost per Shot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy Pistol | Tech Scrap ×2 + Coil ×1 | 10 | 0.2 Tech Scrap + 0.1 Coil |
| Shotgun | Metal Scrap ×3 + Gunpowder ×1 | 4 | 0.75 Metal Scrap + 0.25 Gunpowder |
| Deatomizer | Refined Carbon ×1 + Leyak Essence ×1 | 5 | 0.2 Refined Carbon + 0.2 Leyak Essence |
The Energy Pistol has the cheapest ammo in the game by a wide margin. No rare materials. No Gunpowder. Just basic scrap that you trip over constantly.
Upgrade Path: Mk I → Mk II → Mk III
The Energy Pistol has three tiers. Each upgrade is applied at the Weapons Bench and keeps your existing pistol — you do not craft a new one.
| Tier | Damage | Fire Rate | Magazine | Upgrade Materials |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mk I (base) | 14 | 3.0/s | 15 | — |
| Mk II | 20 | 3.0/s | 20 | Refined Carbon ×2, Coil ×2 |
| Mk III | 28 | 3.5/s | 25 | Leyak Essence ×3, Memory Brick ×1 |
Mk II: The Sweet Spot
Mk II is the single most important upgrade in the game for cost-to-power ratio. You gain +6 damage per shot (43% increase), +5 magazine capacity, and the materials are mid-game commons. Refined Carbon comes from the Chemistry bench. Coils drop from every electronics pile in the facility.
Rush Mk II as soon as you have access to Refined Carbon. It transforms the pistol from "annoying backup" to "reliable primary."
Mk III: Endgame Sidearm
Mk III bumps damage to 28 and fire rate to 3.5 shots per second. That pushes DPS to 98 — approaching the Deatomizer's output. But the Leyak Essence ×3 cost is steep. Most players who can farm Leyak Essence are already building a Deatomizer.
Mk III makes sense if you want the cheapest endgame ammo economy. Deatomizer ammo requires Leyak Essence per batch. Energy Cells never do. So a Mk III pistol with infinite cheap ammo can outperform a Deatomizer that you cannot afford to feed.
DPS Comparison by Tier
| Tier | Damage | Fire Rate | DPS | Increase Over Previous |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mk I | 14 | 3.0 | 42.0 | — |
| Mk II | 20 | 3.0 | 60.0 | +43% |
| Mk III | 28 | 3.5 | 98.0 | +63% |
DPS in Context
| Weapon | DPS | Ammo Cost Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe Club (melee) | ~25 | Free |
| Energy Pistol Mk I | 42 | Very Low |
| Energy Pistol Mk II | 60 | Very Low |
| Shotgun | 72 | Medium |
| Energy Pistol Mk III | 98 | Very Low |
| Deatomizer | 110 | High |
The Mk II pistol sits between melee and the Shotgun. The Mk III competes with the Deatomizer while costing a fraction of the ammo budget.
Damage by Enemy Type
Energy damage has different effectiveness multipliers against enemy categories.
| Enemy Type | Damage Modifier | Mk II Effective DPS | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical (turrets, drones) | 1.5× | 90 | Energy wrecks machines. Your best option for mechanical targets |
| Organic (pests, creatures) | 1.0× | 60 | Neutral. Standard damage, no bonus or penalty |
| Anomaly creatures (Leyaks, Phantoms) | 1.25× | 75 | Slight bonus. Good for anomaly farming |
| Armored (heavy soldiers, shielded) | 0.75× | 45 | Reduced. Switch to physical damage weapons for armored targets |
| Order Soldiers | 0.8× | 48 | Energy-resistant. Shotgun or melee is better here |
The takeaway: carry the Energy Pistol for general use and mechanical targets. Switch to a physical weapon for Order Soldiers and armored enemies.
Ammo Efficiency — Shots to Kill
How many cells does it actually take to drop common enemies?
| Enemy | HP (approx) | Mk I Shots | Mk II Shots | Mk III Shots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Pest | 30 | 3 | 2 | 2 |
| Lab Rat | 50 | 4 | 3 | 2 |
| Security Drone (mechanical) | 60 | 3 | 2 | 2 |
| Leyak | 150 | 11 | 8 | 5 |
| Order Scout | 120 | 11 | 8 | 6 |
| Order Soldier (heavy) | 200 | 19 | 14 | 10 |
| Reaper | 300 | 22 | 15 | 11 |
At Mk II, a basic pest dies in 2 shots. One crafting batch of 10 cells handles 5 pest kills. That efficiency is why the Energy Pistol dominates exploration loadouts.
Against Leyaks, Mk II takes 8 shots — less than half a magazine. You can clear 2 Leyaks per magazine with cells to spare. At Mk III, 5 shots per Leyak means 5 kills per magazine.
Best Use Cases
Ideal for:
- General exploration — cheap, reliable, 20m range keeps you safe
- Pest control — one-shots or two-shots most small creatures at Mk II
- Mechanical targets — 1.5× bonus makes it the best gun for drones and turrets
- Kiting large enemies — fire while backpedaling at 15-20m distance
- Ammo conservation — use between boss fights to save expensive ammo
- New players — forgiving fire rate, easy to aim, cheap to replace
Not ideal for:
- Boss fights at Mk I or Mk II — DPS is too low for the health pools
- Point-blank combat — Shotgun or melee does more damage up close
- Order Soldier groups — energy resistance makes fights drag
- Armored enemies — switch to physical damage
Repair and Durability
| Tier | Repair Materials | Durability Restored | Total Durability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mk I | Metal Scrap ×1, Tech Scrap ×1 | 150 uses | 300 |
| Mk II | Metal Scrap ×1, Coil ×1 | 150 uses | 300 |
| Mk III | Refined Carbon ×1, Tech Scrap ×1 | 150 uses | 300 |
Repair costs are trivial at every tier. A single Metal Scrap and Tech Scrap restores half your durability. This is another reason the pistol is the best daily weapon — maintenance costs almost nothing.
Repair before every expedition. Do not wait for the weapon to break mid-fight. A broken weapon in combat means swapping to melee while something is chewing on you.
Combat Tactics
Kiting
The Energy Pistol has 20m effective range. Most melee enemies move at roughly 5 meters per second. That means you have 4 seconds of free damage before they reach you — 12 shots at base fire rate, 14 at Mk III. Against a 50 HP pest, it is dead before it touches you.
Practice the backpedal-and-fire rhythm. Walk backward, hold fire, sidestep obstacles. The hallways of Office Sector and Lab Sector are perfect kiting corridors.
Headshots
Headshots deal 1.5× damage. At Mk II, a headshot hits for 30 damage. Against a 50 HP Lab Rat, one headshot (30) plus one body shot (20) kills in 2 shots instead of 3. That is a 33% ammo savings per kill — it adds up over a full run.
Reload Discipline
The 1.5-second reload feels short on paper. During combat, it is an eternity. Reload the moment you hear the magazine click — do not fire the last cell and then reload. Top off behind cover or during any gap in enemy aggro.
Weapon Pairing
Carry a melee backup. A Pipe Club or Spear costs nothing and covers the Energy Pistol's weakness: close range. When an enemy closes the gap, swap to melee. Weapon swapping is faster than reloading.
For mid-game, pair the Mk II Energy Pistol with a Shotgun. Pistol for range and general use. Shotgun for close encounters and armored targets. This loadout covers every situation until endgame.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Why It Happens | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Scrapping the pistol when you find a "better" weapon | Focused on raw damage numbers | Keep the pistol as your exploration sidearm permanently. Nothing beats its ammo economy |
| Skipping the Mk II upgrade | Saving Refined Carbon for other projects | Mk II costs 2 Refined Carbon and nearly doubles your effectiveness. It is the highest-value upgrade in the game |
| Fighting at close range | Panic shooting when enemies rush | Practice kiting at 15-20m. Back up and fire. Use corridors as kill lanes |
| Not crafting enough ammo before expeditions | Underestimates how many cells a run requires | Carry at least 50 cells per expedition. 100 for boss-heavy areas |
| Ignoring headshots | Just aiming center mass | Aim for the head. 1.5× multiplier saves significant ammo over a session |
| Using it against Order Soldiers | Only weapon available | Switch to physical damage. Shotgun or melee beats the pistol here |
| Letting durability hit zero | Not checking condition | Repair before every expedition. Costs almost nothing |
