Diagnose slot pressure versus carried-weight pressure, respond to each load state, protect recovery items, and rebuild a route loadout after failure.

Diagnose whether a failed loadout is limited by slots, weight, or both. Source basis: the references listed on this page, checked for game version 1.4. This original planning diagram is not to scale and is not copied game or wiki media.
Diagnose the right limit first
An Abiotic Factor loadout can fail because it has no empty main-inventory slot, because carried weight has crossed a penalty threshold, or because both happen at once. These problems look similar during a rushed loot run, but they require different corrections. A larger backpack solves capacity pressure. It does not automatically solve a heavy collection of equipment, armor, tools, and dense stacks. Weight reduction helps the items stored in the relevant area, but it does not create a slot for a new item type.
The main inventory begins with 12 pocket slots. Backpacks increase that total. The Backpack source reports total capacity, so a Basic Backpack's 18 slots already include the original 12. Do not add the base pockets a second time when planning a route. The Backpack Route Planner uses the same total-capacity interpretation and separates reserved loadout slots from planned loot slots.
Before dropping supplies, look at both the slot count and the current carry state. Removing one heavy stack can repair a weight problem while leaving slot pressure unchanged. Consolidating two partial stacks can free a slot without changing weight enough to restore movement.

All inventory areas contribute to character weight, though some areas apply weight reduction to stored items. That means moving an item between inventory areas can change how the load behaves without changing the number of objects carried. Use the live weight display to confirm the result. This guide does not assign a universal weight budget because Strength, equipment, pack properties, and the selected items differ between saves.
Read and respond to carry states
The Mechanics and Skills references distinguish productive heavy states from Overencumbered. Heavy Load and Encumbered reduce stamina regeneration and movement while granting Strength XP during movement. Overencumbered imposes the strongest penalty and does not grant Strength XP. The Skills page also lists a Weighed Down state that grants less frequent Strength XP.
- Stop before entering a hostile or platforming section when a new carry state appears.
- Identify whether the next objective requires speed, jumping, sustained stamina, or combat movement.
- If it does, reduce the load one category at a time and watch the state change.
- Preserve the primary weapon, one recovery option, route access items, and the return requirement before optional loot.
- Put replaceable cargo in one quick-drop group so it can be abandoned without sorting the whole inventory under attack.
- Continue only when the current state fits the known route. Never remain Overencumbered for Strength training because that state grants no Strength XP.
- At the next safe storage point, decide whether to return, transfer cargo, or create a second trip.

Pack in recovery order
Packing order should reflect what happens when the route goes wrong. Put the items that make retreat and recovery possible into the plan before optional collection capacity. The exact item depends on the route, but the order can stay stable.

Avoid filling every slot before departure. A route can produce an item that does not stack with the expected loot, and a partial stack can occupy the same space as a full one. An unassigned margin also helps during corpse recovery because the returning character needs room to retrieve dropped inventory rather than arriving with another full pack.
Understand hotbar and death recovery
The Inventory source states that main-inventory contents are placed in the player corpse after death, while armor, gear, and hotbar items are kept. This does not make the hotbar a general safe-storage expansion. It is an action area for the equipment needed during play, and retained hotbar items can still be affected by death behavior described in the Death reference.
Plan the recovery trip as a separate loadout. Take only what is required to reach the corpse and survive the known obstacle. Leave enough main-inventory capacity to recover the dropped items. If the original loadout used all slots, the recovery character may need to make more than one transfer or establish a nearby safe container.
For co-op, one player should approach with spare capacity while another keeps the route controlled. Do not let every teammate fill available space with the same recovered categories. State who takes progression items, who takes combat supplies, and who takes bulk salvage before opening the corpse.
Recover from a bad pack
- No free slots at the first objective. Return or use a known nearby storage point. Remove duplicated tools and excessive item variety from the next loadout.
- Encumbered before planned loot is collected. Review worn gear and outbound supplies. Split dense cargo into a second run instead of deleting the recovery margin.
- Overencumbered during combat. Drop the quick-release cargo immediately, restore movement, and survive. Mark the location and recover replaceable items only after the threat is controlled.
- A radioactive or temperature-sensitive item changes the plan. Use the appropriate special slot when available, or make a direct return rather than treating it as ordinary cargo.
- The corpse cannot be emptied. Transfer high-priority items first, place a secure intermediate container if the area permits, and return with a lighter recovery kit.
- A bigger pack still feels worse. Compare pack weight, reduction percentage, special effects, and the actual cargo. Capacity alone was not the constraint.
After recovery, rebuild from an empty inventory rather than trying to repair the old list one item at a time. Place priorities 1 through 5, count the remaining slots, then set a smaller loot budget with explicit margin. This exposes which optional category caused the failure.
Departure-ready check
A valid inventory plan can answer four questions before departure: how many slots are reserved, how many are available for planned loot, which carry state is acceptable on the route, and what gets dropped first during an emergency. If any answer is missing, the loadout is not yet recoverable.
