Night Realm walkthrough: Inkfish, Night Essence, and base potential

Learn how to access, navigate, and farm the Night Realm in Abiotic Factor. Includes fishing tips, essence gathering, and base location scouting.

Player Note: Dr. Kael: The Night Realm teaches you the threat is also the resource. The Reaper drops Night Essence when hit by laser or holy damage, or exposed to X-Rays, with roughly a 2.5-minute cooldown between drops. I didn't know this for my first two visits. I was avoiding it completely, leaving every run empty-handed on the thing that actually matters here.

Community: Not knowing the Reaper drops Night Essence via X-Ray exposure is the most common Night Realm mistake on Steam Discussions: most players discover it by accident rather than reading ahead, based on Steam Discussions.

Prerequisites and Access

The Night Realm is a Portal World reached through gateways created by the Reaper in the Security Sector. Before attempting entry, prepare the following:

  • X-Ray Lamp or laser weapon: Exposing the Reaper to X-Rays or lasers causes it to drop Night Essence, though this effect has approximately a 2.5 minute cooldown. The cooldown can be bypassed by reloading the Security Sector area through entering and exiting portals.
  • Night Helmet: Required for fishing the ink pool safely. Entering without one risks damage from ambient hazards.
  • Empty inventory space: Inkfish, Sable Inkfish, and Night Essence pickups require free slots.
  • Healing items and food: The route between portal entry and the central area may involve enemy encounters.

The gateway opens when the Reaper creates it. You can enter by touching the gateway or by being caught by the Reaper. The Night Realm resembles a distorted version of the Security Sector, with cobblestone floors and patches of dead grass.

Navigation and Route Sequence

The Night Realm has clear parallels to the Security Sector layout, making map use a viable strategy. Follow this numbered workflow for efficient exploration:

  1. Enter through the gateway and turn around to locate the pool of Ink in the first area. This is the central fishing spot.
  2. Climb the stairs in the starting room to find a Night Essence pickup on a railing. Check the corner path to your right for additional routes.
  3. Locate and break Nightspheres to open exit portals and clear corresponding Clinging Shadows in the Security Sector that impede progress. Breaking a Nightsphere opens an exit portal immediately.

The route priority depends on your objective:

ObjectiveFirst ActionSecond ActionStop Condition
Essence farmingCollect four fixed Night Essence pickupsFish the ink pool for InkfishInventory full or cooldown reached
Progress unlockingLocate and break NightspheresCheck map for Security Sector parallelsAll Clinging Shadows cleared
Base scoutingInspect GATE power box locationCheck defensibility and storage spacePower access and build area confirmed

Fishing and Essence Gathering

The ink pool at the center of the first area contains Inkfish and its rare variant, Sable Inkfish. Both can be fished using a Night Helmet. Butchering these fish can produce Night Essence as a possible drop.

The four fixed Night Essence pickups are scattered throughout the realm. Collect these before fishing, as pickups are predictable and fast. Fishing is more efficient once the route is safe and inventory is prepared.

For repeated farming, the Reaper's Night Essence drop has approximately a 2.5 minute cooldown. This cooldown can be bypassed by reloading the Security Sector area through entering and exiting portals. With efficient pathing and mobility equipment, one Night Essence can be gathered approximately every 30 seconds.

Base Potential Assessment

The Night Realm contains a GATE power box near the ink pool, allowing base setup. The environment is calmer than most hostile sectors, but consider these factors before relocating:

Advantages:

  • GATE power access available
  • Calm environment with fewer hostile entities
  • Central ink pool provides renewable fishing resource

Considerations:

  • Requires consistent gateway access for return trips
  • Crafting routes to Office Sector or Manufacturing stations may become longer
  • Power planning needed for sustained operations

Test the Night Realm for three normal sessions before moving a main base. Keep a small outpost with bed, food, water, X-Ray response tools, empty Test Tubes, fishing gear, and one crate for Night Essence storage.

Recovery and Failure Points

Common issues and their solutions:

  • Cannot find exit portal: Break a Nightsphere to create an exit portal. Check the map for Security Sector parallels to locate missed spheres.
  • Reaper not dropping Night Essence: The cooldown is approximately 2.5 minutes. Reload the Security Sector area by entering and exiting portals to bypass this.
  • Fishing without Night Helmet: Return to base or craft a Night Helmet before attempting to fish the ink pool.
  • Inventory full during fishing: Leave common fish and low-value clutter behind. Prioritize Inkfish, Sable Inkfish, and Night Essence.

Store Night Essence separately from ordinary anomaly materials. It is a vital component in crafting Nyxshade Seed used to trade with Warren in the Office Sector for GATE Security Key, and it repairs Flow Control Modules required to activate a portal to Canaan within Cascade Laboratories.

When to leave the Night Realm

The Night Realm is efficient only while the run stays objective-driven. Once the current target is satisfied, lingering there usually adds travel risk rather than value.

GoalLeave when...Reason
Night Essence farmingYou have the planned craft quantity plus one spareExtra essence is useful, but not worth a sloppy corpse run
Security progressionThe required Nightsphere is broken and the corresponding blocker is clearedStaying after the unlock only delays the next real objective
Base scoutingYou confirmed power access, approach safety, and storage spaceLong test stays do not reveal much more than repeated short visits
Fishing runThe core fish slots are full or healing reserves are lowA heavy inventory makes portal exits less forgiving

If the Reaper cooldown becomes the only reason to stay, reset the route instead of waiting idly in a half-finished loadout.

Related routes after a successful Night Realm run

The Night Realm usually feeds a later unlock rather than standing alone. These follow-up pages cover the next most common blockers.

  • Need the larger sector that produces the Night Realm access loop: read the Security Sector walkthrough.
  • Need a broader healing plan before harder expeditions: use the medical and healing guide.
  • Need the Warren trade and crate logic that uses Night materials: check the endgame shortcut and security crate guide.
  • Need the later repair chain for portal progression: follow the Cascade Labs walkthrough.
