Tram Station Key unlock order: recipe trigger and three station choices

Unlock the Tram Station Key recipe, craft it against the current recipe, and choose which confirmed station should receive the one-use key first.

Separate the recipe unlock from the three confirmed station uses. Source basis: the references listed on this page, checked for game version 1.4. This original planning diagram is not to scale and is not copied game or wiki media.

Unlock trigger

The Tram Station Key recipe unlocks after meeting Sarah Frake and speaking to the Blacksmith. The key is crafted and consumed when used. If the recipe is missing, verify those conversations before searching for a loose key or rebuilding the Crafting Bench.

Confirmed station uses

The current key source lists three locked stations: Manufacturing West near the Digsite, the Cascade Laboratories lobby, and Power Services in Reactors. Choose the station tied to the next active objective rather than unlocking by sector age alone.

StationChoose it whenDelay it when
Manufacturing WestThe Train or its connected route is nextIndustrial progression is still incomplete
Cascade LaboratoriesLaboratory travel is the current bottleneckThe save is not ready for that sector
Reactors Power ServicesLate progression depends on that connectionEarlier routes still need their key

Route procedure

  1. Confirm Sarah Frake has been met.
  2. Speak to the Blacksmith and verify the recipe unlock.
  3. Read the current in-game recipe instead of copying old component icons.
  4. Select one of the three documented stations.
  5. Craft the key, travel directly to the selected station, and use it.
  6. Verify the new connection before crafting another key.

Failure recovery

  • The recipe is absent. Revisit the story conversations in order.
  • The key was used at an unhelpful station. Keep the URL and route valid; craft another key when its materials no longer block the active objective.
  • The station door does not match. Confirm the location against the current key source rather than testing every locked tram door.
  • The route beyond the station is unsafe. Unlocking transport does not prove the destination loadout is ready.

Completion condition

The task is complete when the recipe is visible, the chosen station is open, and the connection has been tested in both directions. Use the Manufacturing West route for the Blacksmith path or the Reactors walkthrough before committing a late-game key.

Plan the unlock as a transport project

Before spending the key, write down what the station changes. A useful answer names the destination, the task on the far side, and the return benefit. "It is the next locked station" is not enough. The Manufacturing West station supports the Train route documented by its source. The Cascade lobby station changes movement through laboratory progression. The Power Services station belongs to a much later route and should be evaluated against current Reactors objectives.

Stage the station trip separately from exploration beyond it. Carry the key, normal route protection, and enough free space for the immediate objective, but do not assume a transport unlock makes every connected area safe. On arrival, identify both platforms and test where the tram actually travels. This prevents the map from recording an imagined connection based on station names alone.

For co-op saves, tell the group which station was selected before crafting. A one-use item should not disappear into a door that only one player expected to open. If two stations are equally useful, prefer the one that removes the current shared travel bottleneck; the second key can remain a clearly named materials goal.

Record four facts after use: the station opened, the destination reached, the return worked, and the route objective changed. Those observations turn the unlock into durable navigation knowledge rather than a single successful door interaction.

Keep the three station decisions independent

Opening one station does not prove that another station is ready or useful. Manufacturing West, the Cascade Laboratories lobby, and Reactors Power Services belong to different route states. Evaluate each against the objective currently shown in the save and the hazards on the connected route.

Before a later key is crafted, review the first unlock. If it shortened a route the group actually repeats, use that result as the decision standard. If it opened transport that no current task uses, do not repeat the same reasoning at the next station. This is a progression choice, not a fixed best-to-worst tier list.

Keep the key in a named expedition slot until the selected lock is reached. The source documents that it is consumed on use, so the team should confirm the station label before interacting. Afterward, update the route note rather than leaving an obsolete "locked" marker in the base plan.

Common Mistakes

MistakeWhy it happensHow to avoid it
Crafting the key before meeting Sarah FrakePlayer assumes the recipe is always availableComplete both NPC conversations first; check the Crafting Bench recipe list
Unlocking the furthest station first"Unlock the hardest area early" instinctMatch the key to the current active objective, not the sector difficulty
Using the key on the wrong tram doorMultiple locked doors look identicalConfirm the station name on the current Tram Station Key wiki page before interacting
No one in co-op knows which station was openedPlayer crafts and uses the key without announcing itCall out the target station before crafting; all players should agree
Assuming the unlocked station means the destination is safeTransport access feels like progression completionScout the far platform and check enemy levels before committing supplies
Copying recipe materials from an outdated guidePatch changed the crafting costRead the in-game recipe directly; do not trust screenshots from older versions
Crafting multiple keys at once without a planPlayer stockpiles keys "just in case"Craft one key per confirmed objective; materials are better spent elsewhere until needed

Recipe materials reference

The exact recipe can change between patches. Always verify at the Crafting Bench. As of version 1.4, the key requires materials available from mid-game sectors. If a material is missing, check whether the Blacksmith conversation triggered correctly. The recipe will not appear in the bench until both Sarah Frake and the Blacksmith dialogues are finished.

Co-op decision framework

In a group save, the three stations serve different progression paths. Before crafting, ask two questions: which station removes the longest current detour, and which destination has a task the group is ready for. If opinions split, pick the station that benefits the most players on the current session. The second key can wait until materials restock and the next objective is clear.
