Shadowgate progression route: prepare Null Grenades and preserve a return
Plan a Shadowgate visit around confirmed access, required objective tools, hazardous branches, and a clean extraction.

What this page does differently
Shadowgate contains progression interactions and valuable optional material, but a first visit should not treat every branch as one objective. This guide separates entry readiness, the Null Grenade-dependent work documented by the source, optional collection, and extraction. It does not reproduce the map or claim an exact grenade total when the live recipe or objective can change.
Readiness table
| Requirement | Why it matters | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Shadowgate access | Prevents packing for a route that is still gated | Current Shadowgate source and in-game objective |
| Null Grenades | Used for the documented progression interactions | Current Null Grenade source and inventory |
| Combat and recovery kit | Gatekeepers and the environment can interrupt the route | Normal late-route readiness check |
| Reserved carry space | Keeps progression output ahead of optional loot | Empty slots recorded before entry |
Craft against the current in-game requirement. Do not copy a grenade quantity from an older guide without checking the present Shadowgate source.
Progression-first sequence
- Stage the confirmed tools and leave optional farming equipment at base.
- Enter and identify the portal-side return point.
- Complete the required Null Grenade interaction before collecting Residue or exploring side branches.
- Reassess supplies at the next safe landmark.
- Extract once the progression result is secured, even if optional areas remain.
This creates a clean first-clear result. Later visits can optimize material collection without risking the unlock.
Optional branch rules
Residue is a confirmed Shadowgate resource, but its presence does not make every detour worthwhile. Collect it after the primary interaction if the return route is known and the group still has recovery capacity. If either condition fails, record the branch for a later portal reset.
Avoid presenting a visual resemblance or unexplored platform as a guaranteed route. A useful guide distinguishes what the source confirms from what a player might test.
Failure recovery
- Null Grenades are exhausted before the objective. Leave and rebuild the required stock; do not substitute an unrelated explosive.
- The route branches before orientation is stable. Mark one branch and return to the entry anchor.
- Progression loot competes with Residue. Keep the progression item and abandon the optional load.
- A patch changes an interaction. Follow the in-game objective and current linked source, then update the route only after verification.
Completion condition
The route is complete when the documented progression interaction is finished, the critical output is extracted, and the return can be repeated. Use the late-game gear checklist if readiness is the blocker, or the portal resource comparison before turning Shadowgate into a farming destination.
Prepare the grenade budget from the current objective
The current Shadowgate source should determine how many Null Grenade interactions the intended route requires. Add a small recovery reserve only when the recipe and available materials support it. Do not publish a permanent minimum based on one patch or one route variation. The checklist should record the objective, confirmed interactions, inventory count at entry, and the point where the run must stop.
Null Grenades are progression tools here, so protect them from casual combat use. Put ordinary combat consumables in a separate inventory row and call out which item is being thrown. In co-op, one player should own the interaction stock while another confirms the target. This reduces duplicate throws and keeps the remaining budget visible.
Distinguish completion from collection
After the required interaction, return to the last safe landmark and verify the objective state. Only then should the group begin a Residue branch. Record the carry space reserved for the progression result before collecting optional material. If the objective did not update, debug the interaction while the route and inventory are still controlled.
A later farming run can remove the story equipment and optimize for collection, but it should still preserve the entry anchor and extraction trigger. Compare the amount actually used at the base with the cost of repeating Shadowgate. Portal-specific material is not automatically valuable if it accumulates with no recipe or construction plan.
Version review
Recheck the Shadowgate, Null Grenade, and Residue pages after major updates. Change a count, access step, or item claim only when the new source supports it. Route advice such as "complete progression before optional farming" can remain stable even when one interaction moves; factual details cannot.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Why it happens | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Using Null Grenades on regular enemies | Player forgets they are progression tools, not combat consumables | Store Null Grenades in a separate inventory row from combat throwables |
| Entering without checking current grenade recipe | Old guides list outdated material costs | Read the in-game recipe at the Crafting Bench before each visit |
| Collecting Residue before completing the objective | Residue is visible early and feels urgent | Walk past it on the first pass; collect only after the progression interaction is done |
| Both co-op players throwing Null Grenades at the same target | No one called which player owns the interaction stock | Assign one grenade holder before entry; the second player confirms the target |
| No return anchor identified at entry | Player rushes toward the first objective marker | Stop at the portal side, name a visible landmark, and tell the group |
| Packing farming gear on a first visit | Player wants to optimize a single trip | Stage farming equipment at base; first visit is progression only |
| Treating every platform as a guaranteed route | A ledge or visual cue looks like it leads somewhere | Only follow paths confirmed by the current Shadowgate source or a tested prior visit |
Inventory loadout for a progression run
| Slot | Item | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Progression | Null Grenades (current recipe quantity + 1 reserve) | Do not throw these in combat |
| Combat | Ranged weapon + ammo | For gatekeepers; keep separate from progression items |
| Recovery | 4-6 Medkits | Environmental damage and fights drain health fast |
| Utility | Flashlight or Headlamp | Shadowgate visibility is limited in several branches |
| Food | Stamina-buffing meals, 2-3 servings | Sustain movement through the full route |
| Empty slots | 3-4 minimum | Reserved for the progression result and any Residue collected after |
